Naval vessels are increasingly required to operate large helicopters to support a wide range of missions. Accordingly, flight deck structures are generally designed in accordance with existing naval and classification society rules, which primarily consider loads induced by normal or emergency landings. However, operational experience and accident statistics indicate that helicopter–flight deck collision accidents frequently occur under abnormal landing or take-off conditions, particularly for vessels operating large rotorcraft.
In this study, a probabilistic approach is proposed to derive realistic helicopter collision scenarios for the structural safety assessment of flight decks on naval vessels. Key collision variables, including impact velocities, attitude angles, and ship motions, are identified based on accident data collected from international aviation safety reports. Appropriate probability density functions are selected through goodness-of-fit tests, and representative collision scenarios are generated using the Latin Hypercube Sampling technique.
The derived probabilistic collision scenarios are compared with conventional design load cases specified in existing standards to evaluate their applicability and limitations. The results demonstrate that the proposed methodology provides a more rational and reliable basis for assessing the structural safety of flight decks, particularly for vessels operating large helicopters above critical compartments such as mine storage spaces.
The proposed approach is expected to contribute to the improvement of flight deck design practices and to support the development of enhanced safety criteria for naval vessels operating large rotorcraft.
