Complex systems research investigates how large-scale collective behaviors emerge from interactions among many individuals. Although complex systems arise in diverse fields, they often exhibit common features such as stochastic dynamics, interactions among individuals, and collective behaviors. Because of these characteristics, complex systems have been studied using a wide range of approaches, including empirical data analysis, stochastic simulations, and theoretical modeling.
This thesis explores several types of evolutionary dynamics in complex systems using these approaches. Rather than focusing on a single type of system, this thesis examines how interactions among individuals generate collective patterns across different domains. The systems studied in this thesis range from global content consumption on online streaming platforms to collective hunting behaviors and the evolution of sex ratios.
As an example of empirical data analysis, this thesis investigates global content consumption dynamics using daily Netflix Top-10 TV show rankings from multiple countries. Community detection analyses reveal groups of countries with similar viewing patterns, reflecting both global synchronization and regional diversity in cultural consumption dynamics. Information-theoretic measures such as Shannon entropy, mutual information, and Kullback-Leibler divergence are further used to examine temporal relationships and directional patterns in content popularity.
Interactions among individuals are further investigated through stochastic simulations of predator–prey systems. By introducing several predator chasing strategies, the simulations show that selfish behaviors can dominate populations despite lower collective hunting efficiency, leading to a social dilemma between individual-level and group-level benefits. At the same time, cooperative hunting strategies can emerge under evolutionary mechanisms such as group selection. The framework is further extended using neural-network-based predator strategies, allowing more flexible and diverse behavioral dynamics than predefined rule-based strategies.
Finally, a game-theoretic framework is used to investigate the evolution of biased sex ratios. Classical Fisherian theory predicts that the equilibrium birth sex ratio approaches 1:1 under broad conditions. In contrast, the model proposed in this thesis shows that the overall birth sex ratio can deviate from equality when reproductive continuation depends on the sex of previously born offspring. The results further suggest that, when reproductive dynamics depend on strategy, evolutionary fitness should be evaluated based on the expected mating opportunities of offspring rather than the expected number of grandchildren.
Overall, this thesis demonstrates how empirical analysis, stochastic simulations, and theoretical approaches can be used to investigate collective dynamics in complex systems.
