In contemporary society, companion animals have come to be regarded not merely as pets but as family members with whom individuals share emotional bonds. Accordingly, the loss of a companion animal can cause psychological distress comparable to bereavement following the death of a human family member, and for some pet owners, it may develop into pathological prolonged grief that interferes with daily functioning. According to attachment theory, individual differences in grief responses can be explained by adult attachment patterns. Individuals with insecure adult attachment are more likely to perceive loss as abandonment and experience difficulties in regulating negative emotions, placing them at greater risk for chronic grief reactions. Moreover, because the loss of a companion animal is often characterized as disenfranchised grief, in which sorrow is not sufficiently acknowledged socially, social support may function as a key protective factor facilitating recovery. Based on this theoretical background, the present study aimed to examine the effect of adult insecure attachment on prolonged grief following companion animal loss and to investigate the moderating role of social support in this relationship.
An online survey was conducted with adults aged 19 years or older who had experienced the loss of a companion animal at least six months prior. After excluding careless responses and questionnaires that could adversely affect the validity of the results, data from 158 participants were included in the final analysis. The measures used in this study included the Korean version of the Prolonged Grief Disorder Scale (K-PG-13), the Experiences in Close Relationships–Revised (ECR-R), and a social support scale. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 31.0 and PROCESS Macro 4.2 Model 1 to perform descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, and moderation analyses.
The main findings of the study were as follows. First, adult insecure attachment showed a significant positive correlation with prolonged grief related to companion animal loss, indicating that higher levels of insecure attachment were associated with higher levels of prolonged grief. Second, social support was negatively correlated with prolonged grief, and its main effect was found to be statistically significant, suggesting that higher levels of social support were associated with lower levels of prolonged grief. Third, social support significantly moderated the relationship between adult insecure attachment and prolonged grief. Specifically, the effect of insecure attachment on prolonged grief was strongest in the low social support group, whereas this effect was attenuated in the high social support group. These results suggest that social support serves a buffering role by mitigating the exacerbation of pathological grief among individuals with insecure attachment.
This study reconfirms that companion animal loss is characterized by disenfranchised grief and empirically demonstrates the importance of social support, an external protective factor, in addition to attachment style as an internal factor. The findings suggest that counseling interventions for individuals experiencing prolonged grief following companion animal loss should adopt an integrative approach that considers attachment patterns while actively strengthening support systems involving family members and significant others.
