미술치료사의 전문가 되기 여정에 관한 존재론적 탐구 = An Ontological Inquiry of Development of Art therapist's professionalism

This study was carried out by ontological methods. It is basically a case study conducted for two and a half years - from August 2011 to March 2013 - focusing on the personal experiences of 10 professional art therapists selected and recommended by their peer practitioners. Ontological methods were carefully chosen to better understand the career process through which they grow as professionalists as well as the meaning of their own lives. The process of the “development of art therapists’ professionalism” is as the following. First, they knocked the door to the professionalism of art therapists led by destiny. Second, they enthusiastically devoted themselves to learning and practice. Third, they themselves had to overcome many obstacles of confusion and frustration while practicing. Fourth, finally they came to accept the uncertainty of ‘being human’ as normal. Fifth, they lived ‘like a professional’, applying their knowledge and skills not only to their clients (patients) but also to their own personal lives. They learned that they exist in the universe of uncertainty and incompleteness and that art therapy is a ‘practical knowledge process’ through which 'therapists and clients learn and grow together'. The accumulation of practical knowledge was also ‘the journey of personal maturity.’ It shows how professional art therapists have integrated their experiences and activities into their own ‘professional identity (or the meaning, value and propose of professional life).’ This study aims at better understanding of the professionalism of art therapy, presenting some meaningful data for re-training and intensified education of art therapists both at beginners and experts level, and hopefully exploring a new horizon for the enhancement of their professional identities.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 2011년 8월부터 2013년 3월까지 2년 6개월 동안 전문가로 추천받은 열 명의 미술치료사를 대상으로 미술치료사들이 어떤 과정을 거쳐 전문가로 성장하고, 그 결과가 미술치료사로서의 나의 삶에 주는 의미는 어떤 것인지 이해하기 위해 존재론적 탐구 방법으로 진행되었다. 연구 결과 미술치료사의 전문성 발달과정은 첫째, ‘운명적 이끌림’으로 미술치료사의 길을 선택하고 둘째, 열정적인 학습자로서 ‘배우고 익히며’ 셋째, 배운 것만으로 되지 않는 미술치료 현장에서 ‘정체성의 혼란’을 경험하지만 ‘실존적 관계’ 체험을 통해 넷째, ‘인간 존재의 불확실성’을 받아들이고 내담자 중심 치료를 지향함으로서 다섯째, ‘존재의 불확실성’ 속에서 실존하며 ‘자기 탐구’, '반성’, '성찰’을 통해 ‘실천적 전문가’로 성장해 가는 것으로 드러났다. 연구 결과 미술치료사의 전문성은 공식적인 교육을 통한 이론적이고 기술적인 지식뿐만 아니라, ‘불확실성’의 경험을 성찰하고 탐구하면서 축적된 ‘실천적 지식’임이 드러났다. 다시 말해 미술치료사들의 ‘실천적 지식’은 자신의 경험과 활동들을 어떻게 자신의 ‘정체성(혹은 의미, 가치, 목적)'으로 담아내고 ‘전문성’으로 발달시키는가와 관련이 있고 그 과정은 미술치료사의 ‘인격적 성숙의 과정’이라는 것을 이해하게 되었다. 이에 본 연구 결과는 초심자로서의 미술치료사들과 이미 미술치료전문가라 하더라도 전문적인 능력을 지속적으로 개발하고자 하는 치료사들을 위한 훈련과 재교육의 기초자료를 제공함은 물론, 정체성을 찾고 전문성을 발달시킬 수 있는 미술치료사 교육의 새로운 가능성을 마련해 줄 수 있을 것이다.
