폴 틸리히의 상관관계 방법론 연구

This graduate thesis is a study of “Method of Correlation” which is a theological method by Paul Tillich. Tillich completed systematic theology using the Method of Correlation. To Tillich, Method of Correlation is not simply an intellectual outcome but an outcome of his high dimensional experience formed from his life on the boarder.
This Method of Correlation, which is an existing theological method from the past, is a real methodology of theology. A real theological methodology needs to have a strong life force. This is really about the influencing power since, without it, theological methodology will become as dangerous as the one that turned into an imperialism. Tillich has managed to show us a real theological methodology with a strong life force through Method of Correlation in the midst of such dangerous environment.
This graduate thesis, which is a study on Method of Correlation by Tillich, consists of five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction that presents research issues, objective, scope for Method of Correlation by Tillich.
The second chapter deals with the basic study of Method of Correaltion by Tillich. This examines historical and ideological background that have influenced Tillich. Especially in the second chapter, the life on the boarder of Tillich's life has been divided into the boarder of ideology, geography and history. The life on the boarder of Tillich is not only an important foundation for Method of Correlation but also an important premise for understanding Method of Correlation.
The third chapter examines the philosophical premises of Method of Correlation by Tillich centering on 「Systematic Theology Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ」. The philosophical premises of Method of Correlation by Tillich are Dialectic (Ⅰ), Ontology (Ⅱ) and Existentialism (Ⅲ).
The fourth chapter examines in depth theological method of Tillich based on the second and third chapters. Method of Correlation is a method of correlating a question possessed by a situation with the answer possessed by message. Tillich completed his systematic theology using such method, and was able to criticize and replace many incorrect theological methodologies. Especially, Method of Correlation is closely related to systematic theology, symbol and principles of Protestantism, and such relation is correlation.
The fifth chapter is a conclusion of the theology of Method of Correlation by Tillich. The conclusion is divided into three parts. The first part summarizes Method of Correlation by Tillich, reaffirms the criticisms by various scholars of neo-orthodoxy that criticizes Method of Correlation, and talks about the fact that theology already has a method of correlation going beyond the criticisms. The second part examines the strong influence of Method of Correlation through looking into the 'Change' concept by Barak Obama and 'Logos' concept of The Gospel of John. The third part asserts that Method of Correlation must continue to be developed, as it has in the past, not as a temporary method that exists only a point in time but as a theological method that spans the entire history of Protestantism.
A theological method of Paul Tillich is Method of Correlation. This is a method of spreading God's Words to the people appealing in today's circumstance. Namely, “Method of Correlation is a method of correlating question and answer, circumstance and message, and existence of man and theophany of God”. This method is Tillich's responsible answer that tells what is a responsible answer to those of us living in today in the midst of the confusion of life on the boarder.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 석사 학위 논문은 폴 틸리히의 신학 방법론인 “상관관계 방법론”에 대한 연구이다. 틸리히는 상관관계 방법론을 통하여 자신의 조직신학을 완성하였다. 틸리히에게 있어서 상관관계 방법론은 단순히 지적인 결과물만이 아니라, 틸리히 자신의 경계선 상의 삶들로부터 형성된 보다 고차원적인 경험적, 지적인 결과물이다.
이러한 상관관계 방법론은 ‘이미 오래 전’에 존재해 왔던 신학 방법론으로 진정한 신학 방법론의 모습을 보여준다. 진정한 신학 방법론은 강한 생명력이 있어야 한다. 이는 바로 영향력의 문제로, 신학 방법론이 아무런 영향력이 없다면 이는 제국주의가 되어 버린 신학 방법론만큼이나 커다란 위험성을 내포하고 있는 것이다. 틸리히는 이 커다란 위험성 속에서 상관관계 방법론을 통하여 강한 생명력을 가진 진정한 신학 방법론의 모습을 보여주고 있다.
틸리히의 상관관계 방법론의 연구인 본 석사 학위 논문은 다섯 장으로 구성되었다. 제1장은 서론 부분으로 틸리히의 상관관계 방법론을 위해 문제 제기와 연구 목적, 연구 범위와 방향을 제시하였다.
제2장에서 틸리히의 상관관계 방법론을 위한 가장 기초적인 연구하였다. 이는 틸리히에게 영향을 주었던 역사적, 사상적 배경들을 살펴본 것이다. 특히 2장에서는 틸리히의 삶은 경계선 상의 삶을 ‘사상적, 지리적, 역사적 경계선 상’으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 틸리히의 경계선 상의 삶은 상관관계 방법론을 위한 중요한 토대일 뿐 아니라 상관관계 방법론을 이해하기 위한 중요한 전제가 된다.
제3장에서 틸리히의 상관관계 방법론의 철학적 전제들을 틸리히의 「조직신학 Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ권」을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 틸리히 상관관계 방법론의 철학적 전제들은 변증법(Ⅰ권), 존재론(Ⅱ권), 실존주의(Ⅲ권)이다.
제4장에서는 Ⅱ, Ⅲ 장을 토대로 틸리히의 상관관계 방법론 신학을 심도 있게 연구하였다. 상관관계 방법론이란 상황이 안고 있는 물음을 메시지가 안고 있는 대답과 상관시키는 방법이다. 이 방법은 통해 틸리히는 자신의 조직 신학을 완성하였으며, 여러 가지 잘못된 신학 방법론을 비판하고 대체할 수 있었다. 특별히 상관관계 방법론은 조직신학과 상징 그리고 개신교원리와 밀접한 관계를 가지는데, 이 관계가 바로 상관관계인 것이다.
제5장은 틸리히의 상관관계 방법론 신학의 결론이다. 결론은 세 부분으로 나눠진다. 첫째는 틸리히의 상관관계 방법론에 대해 정리와 틸리히의 상관관계 방법을 비판하는 신정통주의의 여러 학자들의 비판을 재확인하고, 이 비판을 넘어서 신학이 이미 상관관계 방법을 가지고 있음을 이야기하였다. 둘째는 버락 오바마의 ‘변화’ 개념과 요한복음의 ‘로고스’ 개념을 통해 상관관계 방법론이 가지고 있는 강력한 영향력에 대해서 살펴보았다. 그리고 마지막 셋째는 상관관계 방법론이 단순한 역사의 한 시점 안에 존재하는 한시적 방법론이 아니라 기독교 역사 전체에 걸쳐 있었던 신학 방법론으로 과거에도 그랬듯이 지금도 계속 발전 되어야 함을 주장하였다.
폴 틸리히의 신학 방법론은 상관관계 방법론이다. 이는 오늘이라는 상황 가운데서 호소하는 인간에게 말씀하시는 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 방법론이다. 즉 “상관관계의 방법은 물음과 대답, 상황과 메시지, 인간의 실존과 신의 현현을 상관시키는 방법이다.” 이 방법론은 경계선 상의 삶이라는 혼란 속에서 틸리히의 책임 있는 응답으로 오늘을 사는 우리에게 책임 있는 응답이란 무엇인가를 말해 준다.
