The purpose of this study is, first, to investigate the operational status of online teaching methods of physical education classes for elementary schools by questioning the active-duty teachers in this field and, second, to thereby explore operational plans to effectively teach physical education classes online. A total of 30 elementary schools located in Seoul were randomly sampled, and data were collected for four weeks from February 1 to February 28, 2021, on elementary school teachers who were working at the sampled schools.
Semi-structured questionnaires regarding online physical education classes were distributed, and the teachers self-recorded the responses before the questionnaires were collected. From the 238 questionnaires collected, a total of 220 copies were analyzed after excluding the questionnaires with insincere or incomplete responses. The collected data were cross-analyzed using the SPSS 18.0 program to determine the correlation between various qualitative variables associated with the actual status of the physical education classes conducted online. Tests were conducted to calculate the frequency and the percentage, and to compare and analyze whether there were statistically significant differences in the actual status of the physical education
class for the elements of each variable. The results are as follows. First, the majority of physical education classes were online, and the “Cyber Learning System” was the most commonly used platform for both male and female teachers. Male teachers showed higher use of EBS online classes than female teachers, and Google Classroom was the least-used platform. Content from YouTube was most commonly used for the online physical education classes, and content from the Korea Authorized and Approved Textbook Association was used the least. Second, the implementation rate of the health area was the highest across all grades, while the areas of challenge and expression were used the least. The overall results from the teaching section showed the highest use of the cognitive area, followed by the psychomotor and the affection area. Third, the decrease in physical activity was the most frequently cited reason for not using online platforms in teaching physical education classes, and teachers in their 50s were found to be the age group with the highest degree of no online teaching experience. Fourth, the measures to improve online physical education classes
included adopting diversity according to the curriculum of the platform and the content, efficient communication, establishment of a system for the environment to use the platform, and providing
education for actual physical activities. Various problems have arisen globally due to COVID-19, and the pandemic is also affecting physical education at schools. Online platforms and content for physical education are being used to address this concern, but there are still areas to be improved in the physical education classes conducted online. A concerted effort from education experts, teachers, and students will be needed to minimize such issues and to provide practical high-quality physical education. In addition to the need for
studies regarding various teaching methods for online physical education classes in the future, studies regarding the platform and the content of each teaching area according to the curriculum must be
conducted simultaneously.
