성시경의 8집 앨범 《ㅅ(시옷)》 에 나타난 음악적 특징 연구 = A Study on Musical Characteristics of Sung Si-kyung's 8th Album 《ㅅ(si-ot)》

In contemporary popular music, genres go beyond merely musical styles and are developing into an indicator that reflects the trend in music. With a new attempt to combine many different genres away from the stylized method of composition, popular music has taken a form in which multiple genres coexist. Ballads have also continued to evolve over time, and the attempt through multiple genres is effective in showing new musical expressions. This paper analyzes musical characteristics of Sung Si-kyung's 8th album 《Si-ot》 focusing on genres. This album is not limited to Korean traditional ballads, but it is an album in which Sung si-kyung, a ballad singer, expresses new musical possibilities through various elements of genres. The songs of the album are classified into 7 genres: jazz-pop, synth-pop, folk-pop, dance-pop, pop ballad, rock ballad, and retro pop. And this paper analyzes them in terms of melody, harmony, and arrangement. As a result of the study, "Eternally" is a jazz pop style, has a form structure in which a bridge is added to the AABA format, and forms a complex harmony structure such as altered tension, line cliché, and passing chord. In addition, it is converted from 4 beats to 3 beats, but the change of beats does not last as long as jazz music, and changes temporarily to the tempo of the vocal. "Holding on to You" is a synth pop style, which expresses the changing sweep sound by applying a filter to the intro. In addition, by applying a gate effect through audio editing to the back chorus and various modulation effects, it shows an unique style differentiated from typical ballads. "And we go" is a folk-pop style, with an acoustic guitar as the main, and uses the three-finger arpeggio technique. In addition, the bridge, which is often used in ballads, is omitted and proceeds monotonously in the form of an A-B-C, and the simple feeling of the folk is further emphasized by the harmonic progression centered on the triad chord rather than the 7th chord. "I Love U" is a dance-pop style, which uses all the sounds of electric piano, acoustic piano, drum machine, and acoustic drum. It complementarily combines acoustic and electronic instruments to produce a variety of sounds. In addition, it expresses the medium-tempo groove with a swing feel, and repeats the chorus motif 6 times to emphasize the key message of the lyrics of "I Love U”. "The Time I Loved You" is a pop ballad style, which emphasizes emotional depth by utilizing a wide range of 2 octaves or more, and reveals a high-pitched peak. "No Miracle Was There" is a rock ballad style, which is transformed by a sudden transposition from F Major to Bb Major rather than a gradual chromatic transposition for dynamics, and that gives a strong twist to the flow of the song. In addition, each part is changed in the arrangement to greatly express the breadth of change in the instrument section and reveal its strong presence by using the distortion guitar. "First Winter" is a retro-pop style, which creates the atmosphere of the song through the vintage-textured electric piano, mugh base, and various tones of auxiliary keyboards. In addition, the reverb is excessively used to imitate and express the unique reverberation created by analog equipment at the time or early digital reverb. Through a genre-based approach differentiated from the existing analysis of ballad, this study secures musical diversity in the elements of genre by not looking at ballad as a single genre, and presents new directions in popular music creation.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현대 대중음악에서 장르는 단순한 음악 스타일을 넘어 시대의 흐름을 읽는 장치로 발전하고 있다. 과거의 정형화된 작곡 방식을 벗어나 다양한 장르의 결합이 시도 되면서, 대중음악은 여러 장르가 공존하는 형태로 변화하였다. 발라드 또한 시대의 흐름에 따라 변화를 거듭하고 있으며, 여러 장르를 통한 시도는 새로운 음악적 표현을 보여주기에 효과적이다. 본 논문은 성시경의 8집 앨범 《시옷》 에 나타난 음악적 특징을 장르를 중심으로 분석한다. 이 앨범은 발라드 가수로서의 성시경이 정통 발라드에 머무르지 않고 다양한 장르적 요소를 통해 새로운 음악적 가능성을 표현한 앨범이다. 선정 앨범에 수록된 곡은 재즈 팝, 신스 팝, 포크 팝, 댄스 팝, 팝 발라드, 록 발라드, 레트로 팝으로 7가지의 장르로 분류 되며, 이를 선율, 화성, 편곡적 측면에서 분석한다. 연구 결과, "영원히"는 재즈 팝 스타일로, AABA 형식에 브릿지를 추가한 형식 구조를 지니며, 얼터드 텐션과 라인 클리셰, 패싱코드 등의 복잡한 화성 구조를 이룬다. 또한, 4박자에서 3박자 단위로 전환되지만, 재즈 음악처럼 박자의 변화가 오래 지속되는 것이 아닌, 보컬의 템포에 맞춰 일시적으로 변화하는 형태를 띤다. "나의 밤 나의 너"는 신스 팝 스타일로, 인트로에 필터를 적용하여 변화하는 스윕 사운드를 표현한다. 또한, 백 코러스에 오디오 편집을 통한 게이트 효과 및 다양한 모듈레이션 이펙터를 적용해 전형적인 발라드와 차별화된 독창적인 스타일을 보여준다. "And we go"는 포크 팝 스타일로, 어쿠스틱 기타를 메인으로 하며, 스리 핑거 아르페지오 주법을 사용한다. 또한, 발라드에서 자주 사용되는 브릿지가 생략되어 A-B-C 형식으로 단조롭게 진행되며, 7화음 코드가 아닌 트라이어드 코드 중심에 화성 진행으로 포크가 지닌 소박하고 단순한 느낌을 더욱 강조한다. "I Love U"는 댄스 팝 스타일로, 일렉트릭 피아노와 어쿠스틱 피아노, 드럼 머신과 어쿠스틱 드럼의 사운드를 모두 사용한다. 이는 어쿠스틱 악기와 전자 악기를 상호 보완적으로 결합하여 다채로운 사운드를 연출한다. 또한, 미디엄 템포의 그루브를 스윙 필로 표현하며, 코러스의 모티브를 6번 반복해 가사의 핵심 메시지를 강조한다. "너를 사랑했던 시간"은 팝 발라드 스타일로, 2옥타브 이상의 넓은 음폭을 활용해 감정적 깊이를 강조하며 고음의 절정부를 크게 드러낸다. "널 잊은 기적은 없었다"는 록 발라드 스타일로, 다이내믹을 위한 점진적인 반음계적 전조가 아닌, F Major에서 Bb Major로 갑작스럽게 전조되며 곡의 흐름에 강한 반전을 준다. 또한, 각 파트마다 편곡에 변화를 주어 악기 섹션의 변화의 폭을 크게 표현하고 디스토션 기타를 활용하여 강렬한 존재감을 드러낸다. "첫 겨울이니까"는 레트로 팝 스타일로, 빈티지한 질감의 일렉트릭 피아노와 무그 베이스, 다양한 세컨 건반의 음색을 통해 전반적인 곡의 분위기를 형성한다. 또한, 리버브를 과하게 사용하여 당시의 아날로그 장비나 초기 디지털 리버브가 만들어낸 독특한 잔향을 모방하여 표현한다. 본 연구는 기존 발라드 분석과 차별화된 장르적 접근을 통해, 발라드가 단일 장르로 고착되지 않고 다양한 장르적 요소를 통해 음악적 다양성을 확보하며 대중음악 창작의 새로운 방향성을 제시한다.
