      • Long-term Management of Ruptured Chordae Tendineae and Acute Pulmonary Edema in a Dog

        An 8-year-old Maltese dog was presented due to exercise intolerance, tachycardia and dyspnea. Thoracic auscultation revealed grade IV/VI left systolic heart murmur and abnormal lung crackles sounds. Thoracic radiographs showed generalised cardiomegaly with alveolar infiltrate in both caudal lung lobes. Echocardiography revealed left-sided heart enlargement and thickened mitral valve with flail anterior mitral valve leaflet. Severe mitral regurgitation and mild tricuspid degeneration was also detected. Based on the general and cardiac examination, the dog was diagnosed as acute pulmonary edema due to degenerative valve disease with chordae tendineae rupture (CTR). The dog was initially treated with oxygen supplementation wth cage rest, furosemide, and nitroglycerine patch. After the dog has been stabilized, oral medication and long-term follow up was made for 678 days. CTR is known to have a poor long-term prognosis and survival. Long-term follow up of this dog through a series of cardiac examinations and detailed drug application could help predict disease progression. Although the occurrence of CTR in degenerative valvular disease is fatal, follow-up with appropriate evaluation and aggressive treatment has been effective in long-term patient management.

      • 반려동물 입양과정과 유기동물 발생에 대한 관련성 고찰 및 해결방안 모색

        As the companion animal market has grown rapidly, social awareness of affection for animals and animal protection has also developed rapidly. However, as a result, various social problems (unethical puppy mills, conflicts between companions and non-companions, increase in abandoned animals, dog bite accidents, etc.) are occurring. In particular, social costs are increasing due to the increase in lost and abandoned animals, so it is necessary to reduce lost and abandoned animals and promote adoption. However, this problem is not simply a matter of the increase in companion animals. It is related to social problems such as the factory breeding business, the adoption of companion animals without sufficient understanding of companion animals, the perception that abandoned animals are not healthy, lack of guidance in the adoption process, and dissolution of adoption. Therefore, in this review, domestic and overseas cases were compared and necessary improvement measures were found in the process of adopting a companion animal. It is expected that the occurrence of abandoned animals will be reduced by making animal registration mandatory with a built-in wireless identification device. In addition, it is necessary to prevent the impulsive adoption of a companion animal by providing an education system for adopters so that they can adopt with sufficient education and consideration period. It is also important to eliminate prejudice against the adoption of abandoned animals by checking the health of animals under protection from animal shelters. Furthermore, it is necessary to make efforts to lead to the formation of a social community and the promotion of the adoption of abandoned animals by operating an education program that continuously spreads companion culture based on the local community.

      • 반려견 영상 시청이 20-30대의 감정에 미치는 영향

        Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) is known to have a beneficial effect on emotion directly or indirectly, and through this, many studies in the field of Animal-Assisted Activity (AAA), Education (AAE), and Therapy (AAT) are being actively researched. In Korea, studies on indirect animal-assisted activities using media are insufficient. Therefore, in this study, we tried to determine whether the dog video affects positive and negative emotions after the exposure time of 20 to 30 seconds. The questionnaire was collected using the Google online questionnaire form, a video of a dog made by the researcher, a positive, and negative affect scales (PANAS) were used. The video is a short video of about 3 minutes and consists of scenes where dogs interact with people on the lawn. The same scale before and after watching the video and 427 questionnaires of men and women in their 20s and 30s were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 program. Through the survey, there was a significant difference after viewing the other items except for the two items of ‘determine’ and ‘attentive’ among 20 items (p<001). The index of positive emotion increased from 29.9±7.83 before watching the video to 33.88±8.2 after watching, and the index of negative emotion decreased from 16.58±6.94 before watching the video to 13.35±5.48 after watching. As a result of comparing the sum of positive and negative emotions by gender, age, and overall, a significant difference (p<001) was confirmed by viewing in all groups. Through these results, it was confirmed that the watching the dog video can affect emotional changes regardless of gender or age, it is considered to be fundamental research on indirect media based HAI.

      • 식물성 식품재료의 항산화 기능성

        Sixteen types of plant foods were selected, which could add taste, aroma, and functional efficacy during cooking and manufacturing processed products. Hot-water extracts were prepared to examine the antioxidant activities. 1,1-diphenyl -2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging ability were measured and compared. In addition, the content of anti-oxidative compounds was also evaluated by measuring the total phenol content and flavonoid content of the extracts. As for the DPPH radical scavenging activity, perilla leaf, sesame leaf, potato, and pepper showed a scavenging rate of over 60%, and seaweed, soybean, and radish showed low activity. In ABTS scavenging activity, perilla leaf and broccoli showed high antioxidant activity, and seaweed showed the lowest value. Antioxidant properties appear better as the contents of some polyphenolic compounds and flavonoid-based components are higher. Perilla leaf had the highest total phenolic content and flavonoid content, and sesame leaf, radish seed, and mallow also showed high content of anti-oxidative compounds.

      • 반려견의 미용 시 스트레스에 의한 활력징후 및 혈청 코티졸의 변화

        The present study purposed to investigate the degree of stress on companion dogs after grooming service. For this purpose, we analyzed the effect of skin service on changes in the concentration of serum cortisol, the body weight, body temperature, heart rate and skin lesions, and obtained results as follows. Compared to the control group or the ordinary grooming group, the stress grooming group showed high concentration of serum cortisol, and their recovery was slow but they were recovered to the normal state in 24 hours. Body temperature increased in the ordinary grooming group and the stress grooming group compared to the control group. Body temperature after 4 hours from grooming service was lower than that just after the service, and the temperature before the grooming service was restored in 24 hours from the grooming service. The results of this experiment showed that grooming service to pet dogs causes stress and increases the rise of body temperature, heart rate and the concentration of serum cortisol. However, these symptoms disappeared within 24 hours from the experiment, and skin inflammation was observed in a dog but not serious.

      • 천연 진드기기피제 개발을 위한 블렌딩 에센셜오일의 진드기 기피효능에 관한 연구

        In this study, an experiment was conducted to measure the tick repellent efficacy through the synergy effect according to the type and ratio of blending essential oil. The subjects were adults and nymphs of the Haemaphysalis longicornis, and the repellent efficacy was measured using the filter paper bioassay method. Based on the past research, citronella oil, geranium oil, vetiver oil, and neem oil were selected as a single treatment experiment since their repellent efficacy was confirmed. The first experiment revealed that the repellent efficacy of citronella oil and geranium oil were high. Afterwards, in order to investigate the synergy effect on tick repellent efficacy, experimental group was consisted of neem seed oil (carrier oil) that was blended with citronella and geranium oil, at a ratio of 1:1, 2:1, and 17:3 (15%). Also, negative control group was composed of ethanol that was blended with citronella and geranium oil at the same ratio of experimental group. As a result, the blending of citronella and neem seeds showed higher repellent efficacy in all blending ratios than the blending of geranium and neem seeds. In adult ticks, blending ratio of citronella and neem seeds was 1:1 and 17:3, showed the most significant difference of repellent efficacy. In nymph ticks, when the blending ratio of citronella and neem seed was 1:1 and 17:3, the repellent efficacy was the same as that of the positive control commercial repellent. In conclusion, it was confirmed that both nymph and adults ticks showed higher repellent efficacy when blended than single treatment. In this study, the synergy effect of the blending of citronella and neem seeds on the tick repellent effect has a high potential to replace synthetic repellents.

      • 흰다리 새우에서 분리된 근육세포를 이용한 배양육 증식에 관한 연구

        In 2013, Mark Post isolated the muscle cells of cattle and developed cell cultured meat for the first time in the world thereby paving the way for the production of hamburger patties in laboratories or factories. As a result, it became possible to solve various problems that occur while raising livestock and to produce safer food. However, countermeasures against the depletion of fish resources due to overfishing of marine resources have not yet been prepared. Therefore, in this study, muscle cells were separated from white leg shrimps to investigate the optimal conditions for the production of cell cultured meat. Shrimps were purchased from a traditional market and the concentration of NaCl was reduced by 1% every 12 hours to adapt the shrimps at 15% NaCl for 24 hours. After administering collagenase to the shrimps on a clean bench to smoothly separate the muscles, the muscle cells were put into a 100 mm dish containing 10% fetal bovine serum and cultured in an incubator at 24°C. The cells were observed immediately after incubation, 4 hours later, and 10 hours later. Immediately after being separated, the shrimp muscle cells were floating in a circular shape in the upper layer of the culture medium, but 4 hours later, they were attached to the bottom in a circular shape, and 10 hours later, they showed the typical appearance of cells. As a result of the present experiment, it was found that muscle cells of white leg shrimp can be isolated and proliferated in the laboratory. Therefore, it is hoped that through more studies hereafter, cheap culture media suitable for shrimp culture will be produced so that shrimp cell cultured meat can be produced on land thereby protecting fish resources and the shortage of food can be resolved although partially.

      • 동물보건사의 평가를 위한 척도개발의 필요성에 대한 제언

        South Korea's animal nursing certificate is a national certificate. The first examination was held in 2022 and 2,544 animal nurses were produced. They work at veterinary hospitals to perform various tasks while assisting veterinarians in treatment of animals. In this process, they sometimes suffer from stress accompanied by physical and mental pain due to friction with customers, conflicts with colleagues, failure to handle work due to inexperience in medical assistance, physical damage caused by companion animals, and fatigue due to overwork. However, since their job has been just made for the first time, there is no tool to assess their condition. Although there are nurses who assist doctors as a similar occupation, since they do not deal with animals, borrowing the assessment tool for them may lead to errors. Therefore, the development of professional assessment tools for animal nursing is acutely necessary. When the tools necessary for assessment of animal nursing were reviewed, it could be seen that tools for assessment of animal nurses’ “job stress, job satisfaction, job fatigue, life satisfaction, self-efficacy, turnover intention, job performance, job embeddedness, work performance, and self-esteem” are necessary. It is hoped that these assessment tools will be developed as soon as possible to improve animal nurses’ pride in their job with enhancement of their work ability, improvement of the management of animal hospitals, qualitative enhancement of patient treatment, and increases in work efficiency and efficiency based on the results of assessment of animal nursing and many studies on animal nursing.

      • 델파이 기법에 의한 동물보건사의 직무배태성 조사용 설문지 개발

        This study was conducted to develop a tool to measure the job embeddedness of veterinary nurse in animal hospitals. Referring to the tool developed by Michell (2001) and using the Delphi technique, 21 members were composed to calculate the CVR value of the first and second validity analysis, and wrote 20 basic items with a score of 0.42 or higher. In factor analysis, the sample fit value of KMO was 0.863, exceeding 0.6, and Bartlett's significance level was 0.0, which was less than 0.05. Varimax rotational component value was judged to be acceptable when it was 0.5 points or more for each item, and it was appropriate in 16 items except for items 4, 6, 7, and 12. And Cronbach'α = 0.889, exceeding 0.6, and reliability was recognized. The basis for the number of subjects in the 1st and 2nd questionnaires to verify reliability for veterinary nurse is when the significance level ɑ=0.05, number of groups=1, effect size 0.3, and power (1-β) 0.95 are satisfied using the G+ power program. There are 111 people were designed considering the dropouts. The sub-factors for reliability analysis were composed of 4 factors. Factor 1 was named “Link to organization”, factor 2 was “Welfare to organization”, factor 3 was “Prospect to organization”, and factor 4 was named “Fit to organization”. In this study, the development of the scale of job embedding was completed with 16 items and 4 sub-factors. In the future, it is hoped that this study will be used as a tool to measure the job Embeddeness of veterinary nurse and help improve their working environment.
