Interpretive Use of embedded complete clauses in Korean: When a complete clause, preserving tense and aspectual elements and sentence-ending marker, is embedded in a larger construction via complementation, relativization or conjunction, it conveys a somewhat different interpretation from other embedded clauses with the same conceptual content. Within the Relevance-based theoretical framework, Sperber and Wilson (1986) claim that all utterances may be used in two different ways; that is, descriptively and interpretively. We claim in this paper the syntactic form of an embedded complete clause indicates that the utterance it expresses is used interpretively. When the speaker uses her utterances interpretively, she intends to inform audience about the content of the original, or for the expression of attitude. For an utterance to be understood, it must have one and only one interpretation consistent with the fact that the speaker intended it to be relevant to the hearer--adequately relevant on the effect side and maximally relevant on the effort side. The embedded complete clause form as the indicating device for the interpretive use of utterances, can be analysed as constraints on explicatures.

The old man and The Sea has been viewed and examid from many points. Many critics, like Carlos Baker and Philip Young, the so called Hemingway experts , have contributed to establish evaluation of Hemingway's literary art . But there has been little attempt to analyze The Old Man and The Sea m the light of myths and archetypes. Curront criticism has been interested in several aspects of literary and social reality with focus on the psychology of author and the creative process. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze The old Man and The Sea using the mythological and archetypal approaches and to investigate several archetypal images and patterns we are found in the world literature. One of the characteristics of the Lost Generation is the revolt against tradition and conventions and the sought for a new world and new order in literature. In this respect, The Old Man and The Sea is Hemingway's search for a new artistic expression. Just as his literary style is very closely related to Mark Twain's, so his technique of description is indebted to T. S. Eliot's "Objective Correlative." He devoured Eliot's The Sacred Wood, The Waste Land. Accordingly, mythic influence in Hemingway's literary works seems to have been derived from T. S. Eliot, especially in The Old Man and The Sea. The chief archetypal symbols we find in The Old Man and The Sea are : First , the background of the work is the sea. The sea symbolizs the mystery of creation: birth-resurrection, purification and redemption, fortility and growth. It is recognizable that the whole plot of the work is based on the mythic archetype of Genesis. Second, in this work we can find crucifixion of Christ. Killinger's insight is very significant: Santiago has been on the sea for three days and nights,' and Chrit was in the tomb for three days and nights and resurrected from death. When we interpret this as a myth of rebirth, as Christ's tomb represents resurrection, Santiago's sea can be identified with the symbol of the womb of new life. For Hemingway describes the sea as feminine. Thus Santiago's posture is similar to Christ's in various aspects. Third, the sun, the moon and the colors in The Old Man and The Sea are universal archetypal symbols and his skiff is the archetype of mankind's voyage through time and space. Fourth, Santiago's return from the sea is similar to Orestes and the Furies in Greek myth, Orestes, Agamemnon's son, recognizes his mother's unchastity and kills her. But he was on the track with the Furies on pursuit. This is similar to the shark's attack on Santiago% marlin. The complex of these archetypes can be interpreted using the Fry's table of archetypal phase. Last, if Herningway is one of the quintessential American writers, we may find the the American Dream through his works. Santiago in The Old Man and The Sea has the "American Character" free from tradition and conventions. Accordingly, we are able to think Santiago is an American Hero. From this point of view, it should be considered that in The Old Man and The Sea there is the rebirth archetype which Hemmgway sought for m order to create a New World, a New Life, and a New View of Value system, after the long wandering of his own life and works.
