Capacitor Voltage Boosting and Balancing using a TLBC for Three-Level NPC Inverter Fed RDC-less PMSM Drives

        Sukanta Halder,Janardhana Kotturu,Pramod Agarwal,Satya Prakash Srivastava 전력전자학회 2018 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.18 No.2

This paper presents a capacitor voltage balancing topology using a three-level boost converter (TLBC) for a neutral point clamped (NPC) three-level inverter fed surface permanent magnet synchronous motor drive (SPMSM). It enhanced the performance of the drive in terms of its voltage THD and torque pulsation. The main attracting feature of the proposed control is the boosting of the input voltage and at the same time the balancing of the capacitor voltages. This control also reduces the computational complexity. For the purpose of close loop vector control, a software based cost effective resolver to digital converter RDC-less estimation is implemented to calculate the speed and position. The proposed drive is simulated in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment and an experimental investigation using dSPACE DS1104 validates the proposed drive system at different operating condition.

      • Smart Metric Approach to Reduce Web Service Latency Time

        Sukanta Sinha,Debajyoti Mukhopadhyay 한국산학기술학회 2015 SmartCR Vol.5 No.5

There are several marketing approaches to sell products, but selling a product by creating a Web application has become a common phenomenon in today’s life. Software engineers are using a modularized approach to make Web applications and make them compatible with a framework. Sophisticated applications like trading, banking, and insurance holds plenty of business rules, and they vary from product to product. To implement those large number of business rules, software engineers divide the application into multiple modules or framework layers. They can distribute each module or layer of the application among various teams or various companies. Those modules or layers interact between them by exposing Web services, because Web services can interact between heterogeneous systems using eXtensible Markup Language. On the other hand, services like insurance and banking are used by the common people. Therefore, the data volume naturally increases daily. From this standpoint, the request and response time of a Web service is an important factor that directly impacts business on the Web. In this paper, we discuss a metric approach that reduces the Web service request and response latency time and produces an efficient Web application.

        Pseudo fuzzy set

Sukanta Nayak,Snehashish Chakraverty 원광대학교 기초자연과학연구소 2017 ANNALS OF FUZZY MATHEMATICS AND INFORMATICS Vol.14 No.3

A novel idea namely Pseudo Fuzzy (PF) Set has been presented here to handle imprecise or vague uncertainties. Pseudo fuzzy set is an ordered triplet of elements where last two elements designate two membership grades. Both the membership grades may or may not be dependent. The hypothesis is that every positive sense has some negative sense in general and both the senses try to balance the system. So, one membership grade has been considered as positive and another as negative. Considering this concept, here the notion of Pseudo Fuzzy (PS) set and its property along with PS numbers have been introduced.

      • Experimental and numerical studies on the shear connectors in steel-concrete composite beams at fire and post fire exposures

        Olivia Mirza,Sukanta Kumer Shill,M.G. Rashed,Kathryn Wilkins 국제구조공학회 2021 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.39 No.5

Shear connectors are required to build composite (concrete and steel) beams. They are placed at the interface of concrete and steel to transfer shear and normal forces between two structural components. Such composite beams are sensitive to provide structural integrity when exposed to fire as they loss strength, stiffness, and ductility at elevated temperature. The present study is designed to investigate the shear resistance and the failure modes of the headed stud shear connectors at fire exposure and post-fire exposure. The study includes ordinary concrete and concrete with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to build composite (concrete-steel) beams with structural steel. Experimental push tests were conducted on composite beams at ambient and elevated temperatures, such as 200, 400 & 600℃. Moreover, push tests were performed on the composite beams after being exposed to 200, 400 & 600℃. Push test results illustrated the reduction of ultimate shear capacity and stiffness of headed stud shear connectors as the temperature increased. Although similar values of ultimate shear were obtained for the headed stud connectors in both ordinary and CNT concrete, the CNT modified concrete reduced the concrete spalling and cracking compared to ordinary concrete and was observed to be effective at temperatures greater than 400°C. All specimens showed a lower shear resistance at fire exposures compared to the corresponding post-fire exposures. Moreover, numerical simulation by Finite Element (FE) analyses were carried out at ambient temperature and at fire conditions. The FE analysis results show a good agreement with the experimental results. In the experimental studies, failure of all specimens occurred due to shear failure of headed stud, which was later validated by FE analyses using ABAQUS.

      • Ethnobotanical perspectives of Bakhar: an indigenous starter culture used to prepare traditionally fermented rice beverage in rural West Bengal, India

Ghosh Sudipta,Sen Sukanta K.,Mondal Subrata 한국식품연구원 2022 Journal of Ethnic Foods Vol.9 No.-

Haria, a fermented rice beverage, is commonly consumed as a traditional drink by the tribal people of rural West Bengal. This beverage is prepared by fermenting steamed rice with the starter culture tablets, known as Bakhar. It is known that some plant parts are added during Bakhar preparation that confer certain ethnomedicinal properties to the beverage as well as to Bakhar itself. An ethnobotanical survey was conducted that allowed documenting the traditional knowledge regarding this ethnic beverage preparation and it reveals that 10 plant species and one lichen species are used by the Santal tribe to prepare the Bakhar. Among them, roots of Kedar, Chaoli, rhizome of Bach, and bark of Lodh plants are essential, while other plant parts are used due to their specifc taste, favor, and therapeutic properties. But nowadays little or no plant additives are used during commercial Haria preparation for cost-efectiveness. Homemade and commercially produced Haria were investigated for their nutritional quality which revealed that homemade beverage contains more bioactive compounds, such as ascorbic acid (15.40 mg/100 ml) and favonoids (36.67 mg/100 ml), which contribute toward the antioxidant property of the beverage. This current study documents the important medicinal plants used in the starter culture, the detailed process of Bakhar and Haria preparation, and the nutritional quality of Haria highlighting its ethnomedicinal properties.

      • Rank Preservers of Matrices Over Max Algebra

        BAPAT, R. B.,PATI, SUKANTA,SONG, SEOK-ZUN 濟州大學校 基礎科學硏究所 2001 基礎科學硏究 Vol.14 No.2

The max algebra consists of the nonnegative real numbers equipped with two binary operations, maximization and multiplication. We consider the semimodules over max algebra and study the properties of the weak basis and weak dimension of the semi- modules. Moreover, we obtain the characterizations of those linear operators that preserve rank of matrices over max-algebra.

      • Socio-Demographic and Behavioural Risk Factors for Cervical Cancer and Knowledge, Attitude and Practice in Rural and Urban Areas of North Bengal, India

Raychaudhuri, Sreejata,Mandal, Sukanta Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.4

Background: Cervical cancer is common among women worldwide. A multitude of risk factors aggravate the disease. This study was conducted to: (1) determine the prevalence and (2) make a comparative analysis of the socio-demographic and behavioural risk factors of cervical cancer and knowledge, attitude and practice between rural and urban women of North Bengal, India. Study Design: Community-based cross-sectional study. Methods: A survey (first in North Bengal) was conducted among 133 women in a rural area (Kawakhali) and 88 women in an urban slum (Shaktigarh) using predesigned semi-structured questionnaires. The respondents were informed of the causes (including HPV), signs and symptoms, prevention of cervical cancer and treatment, and the procedure of the PAP test and HPV vaccination. Results: The prevalence of risk factors like multiparity, early age of marriage, use of cloth during menstruation, use of condom and OCP, early age of first intercourse was 37.2%, 82%, 83.3%, 5.4%, 15.8% and 65.6% respectively. Awareness about the cause, signs and symptoms, prevention of cervical cancer, PAP test and HPV vaccination was 3.6%, 6.3%, 3.6%, 9.5% and 14.5% respectively. Chi-square testing revealed that in the study population, significant differential at 5% exists between rural and urban residents with respect to number of children, use of cloth/sanitary napkins, family history of cancer and awareness regarding causes of cervical cancer. Regarding KAP, again using chi-square tests, surprisingly, level of education is found to be significant for each element of KAP in urban areas in contrast to complete absence of association between education and elements of KAP in rural areas. Conclusions: A large number of risk factors were present in both areas, the prevalence being higher in the rural areas. The level of awareness and role of education appears to be insignificant determinants in rural compared to urban areas. This pilot study needs to be followed up by large scale programmes to re-orient awareness campaigns, especially in rural areas.

      • Current Status of Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) and Screening for Cervical Cancer in Countries at Different Levels of Development

Raychaudhuri, Sreejata,Mandal, Sukanta Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.9

Cancer of the uterine cervix is a worldwide menace taking innumerable womens' lives. The literature is vast and a large number of studies have been conducted in this field. Analyses have shown significant differences exist in terms of screening and HPV testing facilities among high income and low to middle income countries. In addition, acute lack of awareness and knowledge among the concerned population is particularly noted in rural areas of the low income countries. A detailed review of Indian case studies revealed that early age of marriage and childbirth, multiparity, poor personal hygiene and low socio-economic status among others are the principal risk factors for this disease. This review concludes that a two pronged strategy involving strong government and NGO action is necessary to minimize the occurrence of cervical cancer especially in low and medium income countries.

      • Water Oxidation Catalysis with Nonheme Iron Complexes under Acidic and Basic Conditions: Homogeneous or Heterogeneous?

        Hong, Dachao,Mandal, Sukanta,Yamada, Yusuke,Lee, Yong-Min,Nam, Wonwoo,Llobet, Antoni,Fukuzumi, Shunichi American Chemical Society 2013 Inorganic chemistry Vol.52 No.16

<P>Thermal water oxidation by cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) was catalyzed by nonheme iron complexes, such as Fe(BQEN)(OTf)2 (<B>1</B>) and Fe(BQCN)(OTf)2 (<B>2</B>) (BQEN = <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-dimethyl-<I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-bis(8-quinolyl)ethane-1,2-diamine, BQCN = <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-dimethyl-<I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-bis(8-quinolyl)cyclohexanediamine, OTf = CF3SO3–) in a nonbuffered aqueous solution; turnover numbers of 80 ± 10 and 20 ± 5 were obtained in the O2 evolution reaction by <B>1</B> and <B>2</B>, respectively. The ligand dissociation of the iron complexes was observed under acidic conditions, and the dissociated ligands were oxidized by CAN to yield CO2. We also observed that <B>1</B> was converted to an iron(IV)-oxo complex during the water oxidation in competition with the ligand oxidation. In addition, oxygen exchange between the iron(IV)-oxo complex and H218O was found to occur at a much faster rate than the oxygen evolution. These results indicate that the iron complexes act as the true homogeneous catalyst for water oxidation by CAN at low pHs. In contrast, light-driven water oxidation using [Ru(bpy)3]2+ (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) as a photosensitizer and S2O82– as a sacrificial electron acceptor was catalyzed by iron hydroxide nanoparticles derived from the iron complexes under basic conditions as the result of the ligand dissociation. In a buffer solution (initial pH 9.0) formation of the iron hydroxide nanoparticles with a size of around 100 nm at the end of the reaction was monitored by dynamic light scattering (DLS) in situ and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) measurements. We thus conclude that the water oxidation by CAN was catalyzed by short-lived homogeneous iron complexes under acidic conditions, whereas iron hydroxide nanoparticles derived from iron complexes act as a heterogeneous catalyst in the light-driven water oxidation reaction under basic conditions.</P><P>Water oxidation by CeIV was catalyzed by nonheme iron complexes under acidic conditions.
