Size effect in flexural behaviour of unidirectional GFRP composites

Murat Demiral,Ferhat Kadioglu,Vadim V. Silberschmidt 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.12

In this paper, the size effect in unidirectional (UD) laminated glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites subjected to quasi-static bending loading was investigated: the sensitivity of a specimen’s mechanical behaviour and failure mechanism to its geometry was studied. Composite beams with different numbers of 0° unidirectional plies were tested and their post-deformation structures were analysed microscopically. In the subsequent simulations, the intraply damage was modelled using continuum damage mechanics, implemented as a user-defined VUMAT subroutine in ABAQUS/Explicit, while cohesive zone elements were employed to characterize the delamination between different plies. It was observed that the flexural failure triggered the multiple delaminations; their location was studied. The influence of the size effect on the bending response of the UD composite beams was analysed in depth. The findings of the current study can be used to design modern structures made of composite materials.

Oxidation behaviour and residual mechanical properties of carbon/carbon composites

        Han Meng,Zhou Chuwei,Silberschmidt Vadim V.,Bi Qinsheng 한국탄소학회 2023 Carbon Letters Vol.33 No.4

Carbon/carbon composites are widely used in re-entry engineering applications thanks to their excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures, but they are easily oxidized in the oxygenated atmosphere. It is important to research their residual mechanical properties influenced by oxidation behaviour, in order to ensure the in-service safety. A microscale degradation model is proposed to predict the oxidation behavior based on the mass conservation and diffusion equations, the derived equivalent steady recession rate of composite is employed to evaluate the residual mechanical properties of the oxidized composite theoretically. A numerical strategy is proposed to investigate the oxidation mechanism of this composite. The differences in the degradation rate between the fiber and the matrix resulted in the steady state and an unchanged shape of the front. Residual mechanical properties of composite with three different domains of oxidation were simulated with a multiscale coupled model. The numerical results demonstrated that the mechanical properties of this composite decreased by 24–32% after oxidation for 30 min at 850 °C. Oxidation also caused the stress redistribution inside components, with the stress concentration diminishing their load-bearing capacity. The local areas of increased stress in the pyrocarbon matrix provided new ways for diffusion of oxygen into the pyrocarbon matrix and fibers.

Advance algorithm for two-dimensional fibrous-network generation

Kayali Yagiz,Gleadall Andrew,Silberschmidt Vadim V.,Demirci Emrah 한국CDE학회 2023 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.10 No.4

Fibrous networks are abundant in nature and commonly used in industry. However, their geometrical modelling is challenging due to their complex microstructure. In this study, a novel method, called fibre placement method (FPM), is developed. In contrast to the existing methods, the FPM has various advantages, such as a fully parametric definition of structure. Also, this method is superior in mimicking the stochastic microstructure of fibrous networks compared with other schemes. Various fibrous networks can be generated easily by employing a user-friendly graphical user interface. Also, the generated fibrous networks are compatible with analysis software such as computer-aided engineering tools. Finally, this algorithm characterizes various features of networks including uniformity, void area fraction, and average curliness.
