      • Catherine of Siena and the use of images in the creation of a saint, 1347--1461 (Italy, Giovanni di Paolo)

Moerer, Emily Ann University of Virginia 2003 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

Saint Catherine of Siena (1347–80) was one of the most famous visionaries of the Late Middle Ages and Early Renaissance. As a Dominican tertiary, she was part of the greater movement of lay piety that transformed devotional practices beginning in the thirteenth century. One of the practices that the laity helped to foster was image veneration, and the dissertation begins with an exploration of Saint Catherine's use of visual images in her own spirituality. Evidence for the devotional role of images for Saint Catherine is derived from an analysis of her own writings, the contemporary biographies of her, and by situating her within the greater spiritual context of lay piety in fourteenth-century Siena. Saint Catherine achieved some of her most profound visionary experiences while contemplating visual images, such as her miraculous receipt of the Stigmata of Christ, and therefore images were vital to her sanctity. However, Saint Catherine was not officially canonized until more than eighty years after her death, and during this time visual images again played a key role in creating her sanctity. The remaining chapters of the dissertation examine three distinct groups of visual images that all functioned to construct Catherine of Siena's saintly identity. The first is a series of ink drawings from a manuscript of Catherine's life that helped, through visual analogy with established saints, to justify her disputed stigmatization and ultimately argued for her sainthood. The second is a group of images painted in the civic spaces of Siena that are interpreted as an orchestrated program of civic art designed to celebrate Catherine as a new patron saint of the city. The third is the series of panels by Giovanni di Paolo that depict the life of Saint Catherine and present her as a visionary saint at the moment of her canonization. From the first chapter to the last, this study provides an analysis of the function of visual images in the life and cult of Saint Catherine of Siena, and it argues that the visionary function of images was crucial to Catherine's spirituality and afterwards to the development of her cult.

      • Changing Chapultepec: Construction, Consumption, and Cultural Politics in a Mexico City Forest, 1934-1944

Moerer, Andrea Kristine University of Minnesota 2013 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

"Changing Chapultepec: Construction, Consumption, and Cultural Politics in a Mexico City Forest, 1934-1944" asks to whom does the forest belong? A study about how Chapultepec Forest in Mexico City became an emblematic space filled with didactic institutions, it argues that actors involved in social stabilization and economic modernization institutionalized the concept of "nature" in the urban environment, propagating social divisions through metaphors of naturalness to shape subjects in an era of heightened concern with both Mexicanness and foreign investment. Thus it documents the shifting understandings of what constituted nature through four thematic chapters looking at a failed international exposition, two foundational museums, an exhibition-, print- and legislative-based crusade against the use of charcoal, and out-of-doors sporting and consumer activities. These chapters detail conflicts among symbolism and materiality, popular access and privatization, and national goals and an effort to appeal to foreigners. Criminals, presidents, elite and working women, foreign businessmen, schoolchildren, entertainers, scientists, and civil servants among others demonstrate that though Chapultepec is considered a public space, its meaning and usage have been highly constructed and restricted.

      • A longitudinal qualitative study of collegiate mentoring experiences in the Nebraska Human Resources Research Foundation

Moerer, Tammy The University of Nebraska - Lincoln 2005 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

Mentoring has been found to positively contribute to leadership development, yet little research has been conducted regarding collegiate mentoring programs. This longitudinal qualitative study discusses the experiences of nine adults who served as collegiate mentors (counselors) in the Nebraska Human Resources Research Foundation (NHRRF) mentoring program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1971--2001. NHRRF was founded in 1949 by William E. Hall under the philosophy that the greatest resource is the human resource and that talented people learn best by building on their strengths. Since 1988, the foundation's programs have been administered through the Nebraska Human Resources Institute (NHRI). Following the introductory and literature review chapters, this dissertation presents three manuscripts that explore specific research questions relevant to understanding the history, structure, experiences, and impacts of NHRRF. Multiple, lengthy interviews were conducted with former collegiate counselors who were purposefully selected, and archival documents were researched. Chapter Four uses a case study approach to explore the history, and structural features of NHRRF. Chapters Five and Six use a phenomenological approach to explore mentor experiences. Chapter Five reveals the cognitive and cultural impacts on the participants, while Chapter Six explores the "ripple effect" of the organization on others. This study found that former counselors participated throughout a continuum of four decades in this ongoing leadership mentoring program and themes, concepts, terminology, and attitudes served as common denominators that survived into their adult lives. Participants spoke of building relationships, identifying and mirroring strengths, developing leadership skills, listening effectively, and demonstrating empathy, and "reinvesting" these in others. Applicable leadership theories include: transformational, critical transformational, beta, and servant leadership. These findings suggest that this program impacts leadership development through an undergraduate course exploring dimensions of leadership; by mentors investing in long-term, positive relationships with their peers and proteges; through the NHRRF/NHRI structure where mentors invest time, adapt to the needs of proteges, and maximize theirs and others potential.
