The sustainability route to corporate legitimacy

        Jennifer Hutchins,Mona Sinha,Shiva Nandan 한국마케팅과학회 2019 마케팅과학연구 Vol.29 No.1

The world’s resources, especially nonrenewable ones, are depleting exponentially due to accelerated consumption. Environmental degradation, obesity, pollution, human rights violations, and poverty are often caused or exacerbated by companies themselves. Pushback from communities worldwide due to threats to ecosystems, environments, economies, and indeed the planet, has made it essential for individuals and groups to fundamentally change the way they function. Sustainability has become a necessary transformation for creating shared value, and companies are discovering that it is indeed possible to “do well by doing good”. However, not all companies have the ability and/or inclination to engage in sustainability initiatives, and the ones that do are all across the spectrum in terms of the efficacy and appropriateness of their programs. Indeed, many stakeholders question the depth and genuineness of the efforts which then raises doubts about the value of increasing investments in sustainability programs if companies’ efforts fail to be perceived as legitimate. This paper takes a stakeholder approach toward sustainability and introduces the concept of legitimacy as a measure of the degree to which companies are, in fact, dedicated to sustainability.

Oral disease-modifying therapies for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis

Thomas, Rachel Hutchins,Wakefield, Richard A. American Society of Health-System Pharmacists 2015 American journal of health-system pharmacy Vol.72 No.1

Purpose

The efficacy and safety of the three oral agents approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) are reviewed.

Summary

Limitations to parenteral disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) (interferon beta-1a, interferon beta-1b, and glatiramer acetate) for the treatment of RRMS have been addressed by the approval of three oral DMTs: fingolimod, teriflunomide, and dimethyl fumarate. In clinical trials, each of the oral DMTs was superior to placebo in annualized relapse rate, a key indicator of clinical efficacy, and in neuroradiological efficacy. A reduction in disability progression was evident with higher doses of teriflunomide but was not consistently demonstrated with fingolimod or dimethyl fumarate. Each of the oral DMTs demonstrated acceptable safety in clinical trials, with adverse-effect profiles that differ from injectable agents. The safety of both teriflunomide and dimethyl fumarate is supported by long-term use of related agents for other diseases; however, postmarketing surveillance studies are needed to determine the safety of each of the oral DMTs in patients with RRMS. Dimethyl fumarate seems to have the most innocuous safety profile of the three agents. Fingolimod requires first-dose inpatient monitoring due to cardiac safety concerns and multiple laboratory tests prior to initiation of therapy, while teriflunomide has been associated with hepatotoxicity and teratogenicity.

Conclusion

With the approval of three oral drugs for RRMS—fingolimod, teriflunomide, and dimethyl fumarate—the therapeutic strategy for RRMS has evolved to include options that are efficacious and appear to have administration advantages over established parenteral treatments.

The Impact of Virgin Coconut Oil and High-Oleic Safflower Oil on Body Composition, Lipids, and Inflammatory Markers in Postmenopausal Women

        Margaret Harris,Andrea Hutchins,Lisa Fryda 한국식품영양과학회 2017 Journal of medicinal food Vol.20 No.4

This randomized crossover study compared the impact of virgin coconut oil (VCO) to safflower oil (SO) on body composition and cardiovascular risk factors. Twelve postmenopausal women (58.8 ± 3.7 year) consumed 30 mL VCO or SO for 28 days, with a 28-day washout. Anthropometrics included body weight and hip and waist circumference. Fat percent for total body, android and gynoid, fat mass, and lean mass were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Women maintained their typical diet recording 28 days of food records during the study. Results were analyzed with SPSS v24 with significance at P ≤ .05. Comparisons are reported as paired t-test since no intervention sequence effect was observed. VCO significantly raised total cholesterol, TC (+18.2 ± 22.8 mg/dL), low-density lipoprotein (+13.5 ± 16.0 mg/dL), and high-density lipoprotein, HDL (+6.6 ± 7.5 mg/dL). SO did not significantly change lipid values. TC and HDL were significantly different between test oils. The TC/HDL ratio change showed a neutral effect of both VCO and SO. One person had adverse reactions to VCO and increased inflammation. VCO decreased IL-1β for each person who had a detected sample. The impact of VCO and SO on other cytokines varied on an individual basis. This was the first study evaluating the impact of VCO on body composition in Caucasian postmenopausal women living in the United States. Results are suggestive that individuals wishing to use coconut oil in their diets can do so safely, but more studies need to be conducted with larger sample sizes, diverse populations, and more specific clinical markers such as particle size.

        Carbon nanofiber-reinforced polymeric nanocomposites

        Changwoon Jang,John Hutchins,Jaesang Yu 한국탄소학회 2013 Carbon Letters Vol.14 No.4

Five vapor-grown carbon nanofiber (VGCNF) reinforced vinyl ester (VE) nanocomposite configurations were fabricated, imaged, and mechanically tested in order to obtain information on the influence and the interactions of the role of the microstructure at lower length scales on the observed continuum level properties/response. Three independent variables (the nanofiber weight fraction and two types of nanofiber mixing techniques) were chosen to be varied from low, middle, and high values at equally spaced intervals. Multiple mixing techniques were studied to gain insight into the effect of mixing on the VGCNF dispersion within the VE matrix. The point count method was used for both lower length-scale imaging techniques to provide quantitative approximations of the magnitude and the distribution of such lower length-scale features. Finally, an inverse relationship was shown to exist between the stiffness and strength properties of the resulting nanocomposites under uniaxial quasistatic compression loading.

        Showrooming: the effect of gender

        David J. Burns,Pola B. Gupta,Jennifer Hutchins 한국마케팅과학회 2019 마케팅과학연구 Vol.29 No.1

Showrooming, or shopping in bricks-and-mortar stores and receiving their services without payment, but purchasing from a lower-priced online retailer, can be detrimental to the survival of bricks-and-mortar stores. This study examines how the gender of young adult consumers with differing shopping orientations view showrooming. The results suggest that showrooming is not just a male or a female phenomenon among young adults. The findings suggest, however, that bricks-and-mortar retailers may possibly be better able to dissuade female consumers from engaging in some showrooming activity more easily than males. On the other hand, online retailers may find it easier to prompt male consumers into showrooming activity than females. Although shopping orientations have been shown to affect individuals’ propensities to engage in showrooming activity and the perceived ethicality of doing so, there appears to be no difference by gender. The results suggest that gender has relatively little effect in consumers’ showrooming activity.

Extra-anatomic percutaneous stenting of a malignant afferent loop obstruction following pancreaticoduodenectomy

        Stefan Lam,Sarah Khan,Robert Hutchins,Tim Fotheringham 소화기인터벤션의학회 2022 International journal of gastrointestinal interven Vol.11 No.2

A 56-year-old male underwent a Whipple procedure for duodenal stricture secondary to a 32-mm duodenal adenocarcinoma. The patient presented again 66 months later with obstructive jaundice caused by an obstruction in the afferent loop. Biliary drainage was performed to relieve the obstruction. Two attempts to cross the occlusion were performed, but these were both unsuccessful. Percutaneous transhepatic stent deployment through the obstruction has previously been described in similar cases but was not feasible in this case. An attempt at retrograde cannulation was performed from a direct puncture of the bowel but this failed. Rather than abandoning the case, an extra-anatomic approach was taken by passing a needle across the point of malignant obstruction forming a new track between the Roux loop and small bowel, enabling a covered stent to be placed and relieving the biliary obstruction. This avoided the need for permanent external biliary drainage and its associated complications. Extra-anatomic percutaneous stenting is a viable alternative for the treatment of malignant afferent loop obstruction following pancreaticoduodenectomy.

Materialism and affect toward others: Influences on apparel consciousness

        David J. Burns,Jennifer D. Hutchins,Richard Mathisen 한국마케팅과학회 2019 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.10 No.1

Materialism plays a significant role in the consumption of many products, particularly highly visible products like apparel. For highly materialistic individuals, possessions play significant roles in the construction and communication of their identities, where products are used as tools for individuals to build their lifestyles around the products and brands they acquire and display. This study examines two items, the affect held toward individuals viewed to be rivals and fashion consciousness using PLS-SEM. The results suggest that individuals’ materialism, specifically, individuals’ acquisition as the measure of success and acquisition as the pursuit of happiness, appear to affect the affect they experience toward others. Individuals with stronger beliefs that acquisition is a measure of success and as the source of happiness were observed to hold significantly less positive and more negative affect toward individuals viewed as rivals than those with lesser beliefs. The findings indicate that marketers may be able to affect the marketplace activities of materialistic consumers by affecting the affect they possess toward others.
