Plate heat exchangers are the key devices in Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) which is expected as one of the next generation energy source. To realize compact plate evaporator for OTEC, fundamental experiments that investigate the local evaporating heat transfer characteristics of ammonia in vertical flat plate under low mass flux are taken in the present study. The experiments were carried out under the following test conditions; saturated pressure = 0.7 ~ 0.9 ㎫, mass flux = 7.5 ~ 15 ㎏/(㎡ㆍs), heat flux = 15 ~ 25 ㎾/㎡ and test plate inlet quality = 0.1 ~ 0.4 [-]. The results show that the local heat transfer coefficient increases with an increase in quality, while it decrease with an increase in the local heat flux and saturated pressure under prescribed experimental conditions. However, the local heat transfer coefficient is not affected by mass flux. An empirical correlation for local evaporating heat transfer coefficient was also derived.
