Reaction of pepper plant was classified into vertical resistance, horizontal resistance and susceptibility based on symptom severity and number of bacterial (Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria) cells multiplied within plant when inoculated with 10⁵ cfu/ml of bacterial suspension by injection method. The colony forming units of X campestris pv. vesicatoria counted in the calli eight weeks after inoculation with 10⁵ cfu/ml were the most in the susceptible genotype and the least in the genotype with vertical resistance, while the genotype with the horizontal resistance showed a medium count between those of the former genotypes.
Selection of New Breeding Materials with Resistance to Anthracnose in Capsicum annuum

Resistance to anthracnose has been identified in Capsicum annuum during routine regeneration of Capsicum germplasm at Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center. Eleven plants from four heterogeneous populations were selected as being resistant to anthracnose. Selected individual plants of ‘Apaseo Pasilla’ and ‘Pasilla’ in C. annuum and TC06842 in C. baccatum were resistant at all fruit stages. ‘Ancho Mulato’ in C. annuum, however, was resistant to anthracnose only at the green fruit stage. ‘Apaseo Pasilla’, ‘Ancho Mulato’, and ‘Pasilla’ have a chlorophyll retainer gene and large fruit size.
