Blaabjerg, Frede The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2002 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.2 No.4
Power electronics Is an emerging technology New applications are added every year as well as the power handling capabilities are steadily increasing. The demands to the education of engineers in this field are also increasing. Basically the content of the curriculum should be more expanded without extra study time. This paper present a teaching approach which makes it possible very fast for the student to get in-deplh skills in this important area which is the problem-oriented and project-based learning. The trend and application of power electronics are illustrated. The necessary skills for power electronic engineers are outlined followed up by a discussion on how problem-oriented and project-based learning are implemented. A complete curriculum at Aalborg University is presented where different power electronics related projects at different study levels are carried out.
Fuse Protection of IGBT Modules against Explosions
Blaabjerg, Fred,Ion, Florin,Ries, Kareten The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2002 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.2 No.2
The demand for protection of power electronic application has during the last couple of vears increased regarding the high-power IGBT modules. Even with an active protection, a high power IGBT still has a risk of exhibiting a violent rupture in the case of a fault if IGBT Fuses do not protect it. By introducing fuses into the circuit this will increase the circuit inductance and slight inductance over-voltage during the turn-off of the diode and the IGBT. It is therefore vital when using fuses that the added inductance is kept at a minimum. This paper discuss three issues regarding the IGBT Fuse protection of adding inductance of existing High-speed and new Typower Fuse protection. First, the problem of adding inductance of exiting High-speed and new Typower Fuse DC-link circuit is treated, second a short discussion of protection of the IGBT module is done, and finally, the impect of the high frwquency loading on the currying capability of the fuses is presented.
Power Electronics as an Enabling Technology for Renewable Energy Integration
Blaabjerg, F.,Chen, Z. The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2003 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.3 No.2
The global electrical energy consumption is still rising and there is a steady demand to increase the power capacity, to produce, distribute and use the energy as0 efficient as possible and furthermore to set up incentives to save energy at the md-user. Two major technologies will play important roles to fulfill those targets. One is to change the electrical power production sources from the conventional, fossil (and short term) based energy sources to renewable energy resources. The other is to use high efficiency power electronics in power systems for high efficiency and high performance applications. This paper discusses both areas, in particular the power electronic application in wind power integration.

Power Converters and Control of Renewable Energy Systems
Frede Blaabjerg,Remus Teodorescu,Zhe Chen,Marco Liserre 전력전자학회 2004 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.- No.-
The global electrical energy consumption is steadily rising and therefore a continous demand to increase the power generation capacity. A significant percentage of the required capacity increase can be based on renewable energy sources. Wind turbine technology, as the most cost effective renewable energy conversion system, will play an important part in our future energy supply. But other sources like microturbines, photovoltaics and fuel cell systems may also be serious contributors to the power supply. Characteristically, power electronics will be an efficient and important interface to the grid for the renewables and this paper will first briefly discuss three different alternative/renewable energy sources. Next, various configurations of small and medium power conversion topologies are presented including their control (mainly for PV-systems). Finally wind turbine configuration and their control are described.

This paper proposes an unified definition of powers for various circuit conditions such as balanced/unbalanced, sinusoidal/non-sinusoidal, and linear/nonlinear, for single-phase systems and three-phase systems Conventional reactive power is more classified into an interactive power and an alternating power These powers are defined both m the time domain and the frequency domain consistently, and agree well with the conservation law Several important power quality factors are defined to measure and evaluate the power quality for the various circultc in the single-phase and three-phase systems. simulation results show the power quality factors can cvaluate and classify the various circuit conditions clearly
