For an improved cell adhesion of titanium surface, we develope a plasma modified polymeric ploy acrylic acid (PAA) film that possesses high cross-linking degree and a density of carboxyl garoups, which is good hydrophilic property. Titanium surface modification was carried out by depositing an thin polymeric layer containing carboxyl groups through plasma polymerization using an acrylic acid (AA) monomer. Plasma surface modification can be used to improve the surface properties of commercial pure Ti by creating functional groups to produce bioactive materials with different surface topography. The chemical structure and morphology of PAP film surface were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Hydrophilic property was measured by contact angle. The content of carboxyl group was measured by TBO (toluidine blue O). Focal osteoblast cell adhsion test was using MC3T3-El cell. All chemical analysis showed PAP thin film containing COOH groups on the titanium surface. In 70 W of plasma RF power, content of carboxyl group is higher than other plasma conditions. In contrast, value of contact angle in 50 W plasma power show the lowest value than that of plasma power. In MC3T3-EI cell adhesion test, cell attached titanium surface in the condition of 50 W plasma power showed good initial adhesion. The PAA modified titanium shows a promising application for implant surface treatment.
