Temperature distribution of 250W high-pressure mercury lamp has been measured by the spectroscopic method using relative intensities of spectral lines. To obtain radial temperature distribution, the measured intensity which was integated along the line of sight was transformed into radial line intensity by Abel"s inversion. Temperature was determined from relative intensities of spectral lines of the same atomic species. The measured temperature of 250W high-pressure mercury lamp is 6000K at the axis. In this experiment temperature profile of high-pressure arc is parabolic as known.

The electron energy distribution function in mercury discharge positive columns are calculated numerically from the Boltzmann equation under a set of parameters, such as the electron temperature To. the atomic temperature Tw, the electron number density no. and the electric field E. Especially, using the approximation that collision cross sections only depend on the energy, the calculated electron energy distribution function was shown that it falls off rapidly in the high energy tail.

There are many articles about the HID lamps about it"s characteristics and simulation methods for lamps design or ballast design. For the electronic ballasts of HID lamps, there are some problems caused by acoustic resonance which destabilizes the are of HID lamps. So, some studies suggest the methods to avoid it. For example, the methods suggested are high frequency driving over 100kHz, and mixed frequency driving which alternates high frequency and low frequency, and square wave driving etc. This study suggests the electronic ballast of HID lamps which solves the problems of acoustic resonance, and which can control the luminance by constant current boosted chopper of which frequency is 30kHz and by the squarewave driving of which frequency is 55.5Hz. As follows, we have the good electronic ballast for HID lamps which has the characteristics of a light weight, and a function of luminance control and a high quality luminosity and which saves electrical energy.

A new signal processing system for real time displacement measurement in sinusoidal phase modulating interferometry is described. Although sinusoidal phase modulating interferometry is effective in measuring with high accuracy the displacement of an object, conventional signal processing takes a long time. In this method, detection of the object"s displacement is easily achieved by sampling the interference signal at those time that satisfy certain conditions and by processing the sampled signals with electric circuits in real time. The delay time of this signal processing system is 〈 45㎲. Specially in this paper we describe all electronic circuit and optical system design.

균일한 positive column의 상세한 이론이 충돌 단면적 곡선과 공진 방사 그리고 다단계 여기(multistage)와 이온화 가정을 고려하여 0.5에서 5mmHg 압력에서 수은과 희유가스(rare-gas)가 혼합되어 있는 D.C. 형광 램프 방전에 대해 전개된다. 온도와 이온, 비여기원자, 여기원자의 밀도가 수치해석에 의하여 계산된다.
