This article is written on the theme of “Dr. Chang Sik Hye-am Lee, the theological educator of the Korean Church,” congratulating the birthday of Dr. Chang Sik Lee, the current director of the Hye-am Theological Research Institute, at the age of 100. In this article, I wrote based on Dr. Chang Sik Lee s faith, personality, and academic enthusiasm that I experienced while participating in the activities of the Hye-am Theological Research Institute for the past 5 years, and based on his autobiography and self-introduction, which he has already written a long time ago. As a theological educator, Dr. Lee has been examined into seven topics. The sub-themes are as follows. First, theological education and calling as a theological educator, second, beginning as a theological educator at a Korean theological university, third, preparing qualities as a theological educator and studying abroad; New theological studies and doctoral degrees, sixth, theological educator s activities at Keimyung University and Hanshin University, and seventh, Kenya missionary and theological educator. Dr. Chang Sik Lee served as a theological educator in a seminary for 36 years. In addition to the four years of teaching at Keimyung University, he was entirely engaged in theological education at Hanshin University for the remaining 32 years. As soon as graduating from Hanshin University as the first graduating class, he began to teach the theology as a lecturer while working in the administration of academic affairs at the seminary. The important mind that Dr. Lee showed as a theological educator was revealed when he taught at Hanshin University. Although it was stated as a theological education goal that education is based on the ideology of academic and godliness, the early Hanshin University taught only many academic knowledge of difficult theological thoughts to students, but not a practical theological knowledge regarding the godliness and pastoral practice. He pointed out these problems and made great efforts to improve them. In particular, efforts to clarify the theological identity of the school as a denomination belongs to Presbyterian Church through lectures related to the history of the Presbyterian Church and confession of faith shows his identity as a theological educator. In addition, when he was in charge of the office of the Academic Affairs Office, he was not only responsible for the administration of the academy, but also played a role in the training of godliness for students. For example, he encouraged the students to participate in the chapel and the early morning prayer meeting in the dormitory, and trained their honesty by conducting the exam without proctor supervision. Especially, studying his Ph.D. dissertation at Aquinas Theological Seminary, which is a well-known Catholic university in the United States, shows how broad the horizon of his scholarship in history theology is. Not only did he study Luther s theology as the history of Protestantism, but also Calvin s theology as Presbyterian theology. In addition, through studying the theology of the Catholic Church, he gained insights to contribute to today s so-called Ecumenic theology. Dr. Lee is a great theological educator with the qualities and abilities of the entire Korean Church as well as at Hanshin University. In particular, Dr. Chang Sik Lee always felt sorry for the appearance of the Korean church, which was divided into progress and conservatives despite his age of middle 90s five years ago and founded the Hye-am Theological Research Institute, where he invited progressive and conservative theologians from the Korean church to have a theological dialogue and write a thesis through research. It is the fact that Dr. Chang Sik Lee, who has led these things, is not showing the role of a theological educator in a seminary, but a theological educator of the entire Korean church. 이 글은 현재 혜암신학연구소의 소장이신 이장식 박사님의 100세를 맞으신 생일을 축하하며, 기리는 마음으로, “한국교회의 신학 교육자 혜암 이장식 박사”라는 주제로 작성되었다. 이 글에서 필자는 지난 5년 동안 혜암신학연구소의 활동에 참여하면서 경험한 이장식 박사님의 신앙과 인품과 학문적인 열정을 근거로 그리고 그가 이미 오래전에 집필한 자서전과 자기소개서에 근거하여 한국교회의 신학 교육자로서 이 박사님을 일곱 가지 주제로 정리하였다. 기본적인 소주제들은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 신학교육과 신학 교육자로서의 부르심, 둘째, 한국신학대학에서의 신학교육자로서의 시작, 셋째, 신학 교육자로서의 자질준비와 유학생활, 넷째, 한국신학대학의 교육이념실현과 신학 교수로서의 활동, 다섯째, 새로운 신학연구와 박사학위, 여섯째, 계명대학과 한신대학에서의 신학 교육자의 활동, 일곱째, 케냐의 선교사와 신학 교육자로서의 활동 등이다. 이장식 박사는 총 36년간 신학교에서 신학 교육자의 역할을 감당하였다. 그리고 계명대학에서의 교수 생활 4년을 빼고, 나머지 32년간은 전적으로 한신대학에서 신학교육에 참여하게 되었다. 한신대학을 제1회로 졸업하자마자, 신학대학에서 교무행정을 보며, 강사로 신학을 가르친 것에서 시작한다. 이장식 박사님이 신학교육자로서 보여준 중요한 정신은, 특히 한신대학에서 가르칠 때, 학문과 경건이란 이념으로 교육한다는 것을 신학교육 목표로 명시해 놓았지만, 초기의 한신대학은 어려운 신학 사상의 학문적인 정보를 학생들에게 많이 가르치고, 실제 경건에 관한 신학 정보와 목회 실천에 도움이 되는 실천신학에 관한 것들을 많이 가르치지 못했던 것을 지적하였고, 그것을 개선하려고 수많은 노력을 기울였던 점이다. 특히 한신대학교가 기독교장로회에 속한 교단으로서 장로교회의 역사와 신앙고백에 관련된 강의를 통해서 장로교회의 신학 정체성을 분명히 하려고 한 노력은 신학교육자의 모습이 분명하였던 것으로 이겨진다. 그리고 교무처장의 직분을 맡았을 때도, 교무행정만 책임진 것이 아니라, 역시 학생들의 경건 훈련에도 역할을 잘 감당하게 되었는데, 예를 들면 신학생들의 채플 참여와 기숙사에서 신학생들의 새벽기도회 참여를 직접 독려한 일, 그리고 무시험 감독으로 신학생들의 정직한 경건을 훈련시킨 일 등에서라고 할 것이다. 역시 이 박사님은 학위 과정에서도 교회 역사에 관한 부분을 주 전공으로 삼았으며, 특히 박사학위 논문으로는 미국에 가톨릭에 속한 대학으로 이름나 있는 아퀴나스 신학교에서 공부한 것은 그의 역사신학의 학문이 얼마나 넓은 지평을 가진 것인지를 느껴보게 된다. 물론 프로테스탄트의 역사로서 루터의 신학을 공부했을 뿐 아니라, 특히 장로교회의 신학으로 칼빈의 신학을 연구하였고, 가톨릭교회의 신학까지 연구한 것은 오늘의 소위 에큐메닉의 신학에 기여하는 통찰을 갖게 되었으며, 역시 이장식 박사님은 한신대학에서의 신학교육뿐 아니라, 한국교회 전체의 신학 교육자의 자질과 능력을 가진 위대한 신학 교육자였음을 생각하게 된다. 특히 이장식 박사님은 5년 전 구순 중반의 연세에도 불구하고 진보와 보수로 분열하여 대립하고 있는 한국교회의 상황을 안타깝게 여기고, 뜻을 같이하는 진보와 보수 신학자들을 혜암신학연구소를 설립하여 그 곳에 모으시고, 대화하며, 신학의 학문을 계속 연구하게 하며, 신학학술지(｢신학과 교회｣)의 출판을 통하여 오늘날까지 한국교회의 신학을 대변해 온 것은 그가 한 신학교의 신학 교육자가 아니라, 이제는 한국교회 전체의 신학 교육자로서의 모습을 보여주고 있다는 점이다. 이제 한국교회는 이장식 박사님의 100세를 맞으신 날을 기념하며, 일생을 통하여 보여준 한국교회의 신학 교육자로서의 모습을 오래 기억하게 되리라 확신한다.
