본 연구는 중도시각장애노인이 경험한 시각상실과 그 이후의 삶을 살펴보는데 있다. 이를 위해 후천적으로 시각상실을 경험한 65세 이상 저시력 노인 8명의 상실 경험과 그 삶을 심층적으로 면담하여 분석하였다. 그 결과, 총 4가지 범주에서 13개 하위영역이 도출되었다. 첫 번째 범주는 ‘생애적 사건과 지속적인 아픔’으로 이는 다시 ‘생애 가장 큰 상실’, ‘상실이 낳은 상실’ 그리고 ‘노년기 진행형 상실’, ‘무뎌지는 아픔’의 4개 하위영역으로 구분되었다. 두 번째 범주는 ‘자존심과 자기개방의 갈등’이었으며 ‘지키고 싶은 자존심’과 ‘심리적 극복과 자기개방’, ‘동질 집단 내 안정과 자기개방’의 3개 하위영역이 확인되었다. 세 번째 범주는 ‘사회구조적 한계’이었다. ‘정보 획득의 어려움’과 ‘도구의 부재’, ‘코로나19로 인한 관계 맺기의 제한’의 3가지가 그 하위영역에 있었다. 마지막 범주는 ‘불안한 노후와 미흡한 대처’이었으며 ‘경제적 빈곤에 대한 걱정’, ‘부족한 전맹 준비’, ‘막연하게 맞이하는 내일’의 3가지가 하위영역으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 정책 및 실천적 방안을 제시하였다. The purpose of this study was to examine the loss experience and life after it of the elderly with visual impairment. We had in-depth individual interview with 8 people who were low vision elderly 65 years of age or older and experienced acquired blindness. The results of this study were as follows. The elderly with visual impairment experienced psychological confusion and persistent loss. They considered vision loss as the biggest loss of their lives and were experiencing another series of loss. They have repeatedly experienced the loss of old age and seemed to have become insensitive to the pain of another loss. And they were in conflict between pride and self-openness. They wanted to protect their pride, but there was also a personal difference in self-openness. They showed stability and self-openness within homogeneous groups. There were also difficulties caused by structural problems. They were difficulty of obtaining information, the absence of suitable tools, and limited relationship due to Covid-19. Lastly, they were not able to cope with the future. In particular, they lacked preparation for poverty and total blindness, and were spending their time vaguely without specific plans for old age.
