본 연구는 영국 왕립음악대학 연합회(Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, 이하 ABRSM)의 역사 및 가장 주된 활동인 급수 시험과 전문 음악 교육가 개발 프로그램을 소개하고, 해외 선행 연구들을 조사, 분석하여 주제별 항목으로 정리한다. 각 급수의 시험 요소들이 ABRSM이 주창하는 총체적 음악교육의취지를 반영하는 동시에 급수 간의 내용은 점진적 난이도 상향의 원칙에 입각해 구성되었음을 확인한다. 급수시험을 효율적으로 지도할 수 있는 ABRSM의 교수법적 접근을 분석하고, 선생님들로부터의 수평적 교 수법과 학생들로부터의 동시적 학습법이 유기적으로 적극 연계 되었을 때 생성되는 교육 효과를 이해한다. Understanding an importance of effective synergy between students and teachers, the ABRSM has acknowledged integral connection between its grade examination for students and the professional development programme for teachers. The exam syllabus encapsulates all the necessary elements in music learning for students to become a well-rounded musician. The professional development programme helps teachers to search effective ways to fully capture the benefit of the syllabus. When these two entities operate in synergy, the best outcome is realized upon the semblance of lateral teaching and simultaneous learning. In the end, an unwavering aim of ABRSM has always been to nurture well-balanced musicians through general music education.
