본 논고는 일본의 문화연구 동향의 전반적인 개관을 기술하는 것이다. 1990년대 중반 일본에 도입된 ‘컬츄럴 스터디즈’(이하, CS)로 아카데미즘의 제 분야를 월경하는 문화연구가 유행하게 되었다. CS는 에드워드 사이드의 오리엔탈리즘 비판이나 푸코의 권력분석 이론들과 연동하면서 새로운 사상적 조류를 만들어 내고, 학지(學知)와 권력 관계에 대한 자아비판을 요구했다. 연구자들도 포지션 문제가 아주 강도 높게 힐문 당했다. 그러나 일본에서의 CS가 독립된 분야로 확립되지는 못했고, 문학이나 미술사, 영화 연구, 인류학이나 사회학 분야 등등, 기존의 인문사회과학 분야에 속하는 연구자들이 CS연구자라는 실정이다. 일본에서는 ‘문화연구’라고 할 경우 ‘문화사회학’ 혹은‘문화의 사회학’을 연구하는 연구자들이 대부분이다. 그 이유는 일본에서 문화연구가 사회학을 기반으로 발달했기 때문이다. 또한 일본에서의 문화연구 동향에서 중요한 것은 문화인류학이다. 문화인류학이 현지인의 주체성을 중시한다는 의미에서 실시한 문화개념 갱신은 CS와 연결되면서 기존의 인류학이 가진 정치성에 대한 비판과 반성, 발화(発話) 포지션 문제, 타자연구에서 자아연구로 전환하는 계기를 만들었다. 민족문화의 관광자원화나 자문화(自文化) 내부의 에스니스티 마이너리티 표상의 정치역학을 주요 연구테마로 상정하고 있다. 동시에 일본에서 문화연구의 또 하나의 쟁점은 다양성과 획일성 사이의 딜레마다. 다양한 문화형태 출현은 역설적으로 문화형태의 평면화(平面化)를 가져왔다. The aim of this paper is to give a description of the general overview of Japan’s trend of culture study. As the Cultural Studies (hereinafter, ‘CS’) which were introduced into Japan in the mid 1990s, the ones passing through the general fields of academism came into vogue. CS in line with Edward W. Said’s criticism of Orientalism or Michel Foucault’s power analysis theory, etc., created a new ideological tide and demanded the self-criticism about the power relations with Knowledge. Researchers were also under cross-examination about the issue of their position very intensely. However, CS in Japan failed to be established as an independent field and the realities are that the researchers, who belong to the existing humanities and social sciences disciplines, such as literature, art history, film studies, anthropology or sociology, etc., are actually the ones of CS. When it comes to ‘Cultural Studies’ in Japan, its realm is dominated mostly by the researchers on ‘Cultural Sociology’ or ‘Sociology of Culture.’ It’s because the culture studies in Japan have developed on the base of sociology. In addition, what matters in the trend of CS in Japan is cultural anthropology. The renewal of the cultural concept, which was implemented as a meaning that cultural anthropology values independence of locals, created an impetus for the criticism and self-reflection of the politicity of the existing anthropology, an issue of telling position, and conversion from the research on others to the research on self as it was linked to CS. CS is bringing in the issue of turning the national culture into tourist resources, or the dynamics of ethnic minority emblem of the internal own culture as a major subject of study. In addition to this, another controversial issue of CS is a dilemma between diversity and conformity. Paradoxically speaking, the advent of diverse cultural forms has brought the complanation of a cultural form.
