한국 대학생의 정치의식과 능력주의가 통일인식에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

본 연구는 한반도의 복잡한 지정학적 배경 위에서 통일에 관한 대학생들의 의식을 경험적으로 조사하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 오늘날 한국 사회에서 대학생들은 시장 중심의 능력주의와 개인주의의 심화, 그리고 정치적 양극화로 인하여 정치에 무관심하거나 남북 관계와 통일에 관하여 무감각 혹은 부정적으로 인식할 가능성이 크다. 그러나 미래 세대의 주역인 대학생들의 통일인식은 앞으로의 대북·통일 정책 수립에 지대한 영향력을 미칠 것이기 때문에, 대학생의 정치의식 및 능력주의와 통일에 관한 탐색적 연구는 시의적으로 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 2022년 서울 소재 대학생을 대상으로 307명의 설문 응답을 수집하였으며, 다양한 정치의식[정치 성향, 정치 효능(내적/외적), 국가 효능(한반도/대한민국)]과 능력주의를 측정하는 문항을 활용하여 ‘통일의 필요성’과 ‘통일지지도’에 대한 기초통계분석과 다중회귀분석을 수행하였다. 경험분석 결과, 대학생들은 보수적 정치 성향과 능력주의적 신념이 강할수록 통일의 필요성에 반대하며, 통일 지지도 또한 낮아지는 경향을 나타냈다. 한편, 한반도 국가 효능에 대한 의식이 높을수록 통일의 필요성과 통일 지지도가 높아지는 경향이 나타났고, 대한 민국 국가 효능이 높을수록 통일 지지도가 높아지는 경향을 확인하였다. 또한, 정치 성향, 능력주의와 통일의 필요성, 통일 지지도 사이에 유의한 성별 조절효과가 나타났다. 분석 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 대한민국에 배태된 대학생의 민족 인식을 한반도 전체로 확장하고 남북한 협력의 긍정적 영향을 강조하는 통일 교육의 필요성을 제시한다. The purpose of this study is to investigate university students’ perceptions of unification in the geopolitically complex Korean Peninsula. In contemporary Korean society, university students are more likely to be apathetic or hold negative perceptions of inter-Korean relations and unification of the Korean Peninsula due to the intensification of market-driven meritocracy, exclusive individualism, and political polarization. As such, exploratory research on university students’ political consciousness and perceptions of unification is both timely and crucial, as their attitudes will significantly impact the establishment of future inter-Korean relations and unification policies. In this study, we collected 307 survey responses from university students in Seoul in 2022, utilizing surveys that we designed. We conducted basic statistical analysis and multiple regression analysis on two conceptually distinct perceptions of unification: the need for unification and the support for unification, using items measuring meritocratic belief and various political consciousness elements such as political orientation, political efficacy (internal/external), and national efficacy (South Korea/Korean Peninsula). The results indicate that the stronger the conservative political orientation and meritocratic beliefs of university students, the more they opposed the need for unification and the lower their support for unification, whereas higher Korean Peninsula national efficacy tends to positively increase both perceptions of unification. The study also found significant gender interaction effects for political orientation and meritocratic belief on the perceptions of unification. These findings suggest the necessity for unification education that promotes ethnic awareness among university students and emphasizes the positive effects of inter-Korean cooperation.
