In the belt type electric power steering system, the ball screw is commonly used to transmit motor rotational torque to axial steering assist force. The ball screw operation behavior has influence on the gear NVH and steering feel. High production quality can improve the initial performance of the steering gear, but the ball screw need to be designed with proper size to prevent performance degradation during the vehicle life cycle. The ball screw in the steering gear operates with severe condition when compare it to traditional ball screw operation condition. Because it is applied high axial and radial force from the various condition that the steering gear need to endure. Improper ball screw sizing without considering this severe condition can be result to premature durability failure. However, it is difficult to predict ball screw life because evaluating ball screw durability by test spends numerous cost and time. Especially when the reliability of the ball screw needs to be predicted for the new steering design without tests or mass production. To solve this problem, this study presents the method to predict ball screw durability numerically. First, durability failure of ball screw definition studied to define numerical criteria of the ball screw life and the maximum contact stress. Second, the ball load distribution and contact stress calculated with Hertz contact theory, and the ball screw life calculated based on ISO standard. However, there are some impractical points of ISO standard to calculate steering ball screw life. This is mainly discussed in this paper and new methods of life calculation studied. Lastly, the ball screw life calculation results compared with durability test results and the steering gear field clam ratio.
