라오스는 동남아시아, 인도차이나 반도의 중앙에 위치한 내륙국으로서 기후는 열대지방의 우기와 건기로 나누어져 있어 연중 벼농사가 가능한 나라이다. 인구는 총 4,845천명으로서 인구밀도는 20명/㎢로 매우 낮은 편이다. 하지만 전체인구의 83%가 농업에 종사하는 전형적인 농업국이다. 라오스의 주요 농업사업은 수도작으로서 총 벼 재배면적이 약 60만㏊이며, 쌀 수량성은 ㏊당 2.76톤으로서 비교적 낮은 편이며, 이는 관개시설, 비료, 농약 등의 수급부족이 주원인으로 알려지고 있다. 밭작물 재배는 주로 옥수수, 구근작물 (고구마, 카사바, 마, 감자, 토란 등), 두류 등을 재배하고 있으며, 특용작물로서는 땅콩, 담배, 목화, 사탕수수, 커피, 차나무재배를 주로 하고 있는 실정이다. 또한 축산업은 물소, 소, 양, 염소, 돼지, 닭 등을 사육하여 육류를 생산공급하고 있다. This report is summarized to inform a recent status of agriculture in Lao People's Democratic Republic(Laos). Laos is located at southern east Asia and neighbored by Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Thailand. This country is belonged to tropical climate being with dry and wet season and thus is typically agricultural country. Total population is 4,875,000 and farm population is 83% to the total population. Annual average rainfall is 1,300∼2,000㎜ and major staple food is rice. Rice crop is mainly cultivated at lowland and upland field. Rice yield is relatively low being with 2.8t/㏊ due to major constraints of water irrigation system, fertilizer, and agro-chemicals. Major upland crops in Laos have mainly cultivated with maize, root-crops, vegetable bean, mungbean, and soybean and also peanut, tobacco, cotton, sugarcane, coffee and tea crops are generally cultivated as ndustrial and/or cash crops. In Laos major livestock are buffalo, cattle, pig, goat, sheep, and poultry.
