It is estimated that 10% reduction of auto-body weight can improve fuel efficiency by 4~5%. Magnesium is considered one of the alternative materials for the weight reduction due to higher strength to weight ratio compared to other lightweight materials. Conventional production system of pure magnesium is consisted of horizontal retort and furnace. In this study, a new vertical retort has been developed to improve productivity. The effect of design parameter such as diameter of retort, packing thickness and number of radiation slots are presented in terms productivity and reduction time. Based on experiments and numerical computations, proper design parameters and process conditions could be obtained.
