The supersonic combustion experiment using both step mixer(SM) and vent slot mixer(VSM) has conducted in Tohoku university in Japan. Inflow Mach number was about 2 and a plasma torch was used as a igniter and flameholder. Hot recirculation zone, which was generated ahead of the plasma torch, induced the ignition and combustion. Combustion modes could be classified into three; weak combustion, supersonic combustion, and dual-mode combustion. Transition from supersonic combustion to dual-mode combustion in the supersonic combustor could be designed using Billig's empirical equation. At dual-mode combustion condition, unstable pressure which has developed from the isolator generally affected the combustion conditions in the combustor. However, the vent of VSM prevented the propagation of disturbance from the isolator and has improved the air-hydrogen mixing and combustion efficiency in the supersonic combustor.
