커뮤니케이션 학계에서는 얼굴을 마주보고 나누는 대면(對面) 대화(face-to-face conversation)가 민주적 삶에서 핵심이라고 여기는 경향이 강하다. 이는 특히 존 듀이로부터 영감을 받은 측면이 크다. 그러나 대면 대화는 민주주의 사회에서 뿐만이 아니라 귀족주의 사회에서도 중시되었으며, 사실상 대면 대화에는 뚜렷하게 대조되는 두 종류의 상이한 대화의 이상이 존재한다. 하나는 사교적 대화(sociable conversation)이고 다른 하나는 문제해결적 대화(problem-solving conversation)다. 민주주의에 실질적으로 기여하는 대화는 참여자의 평등성이 확보될 때 가능한 것이 아니라, 그들이 대화의 규범을 준수하고 공공 정신을 함양했을 때 가능할 수 있다. 그것은 대화 참여자의 자율성이 아니라 시민성이 확보될 때 비로소 가능할 수 있다. 그것은 언론과 미디어의 우선성과 우월성이 확보될 때 가능한 것이 아니라, 언론과 미디어가 대화의 규범, 공공 정신, 시민성 등을 철저하게 준수할 때 비로소 가능할 수 있다. 따라서 나는 대화의 현장에 내재된 민주주의가 정치적 민주주의의 규범과 제도를 만들어 내는 것이 아니라, 민주주의의 제도와 규범이 민주적 대화를 가능케 한다고 주장할 것이다. Inspired by the writings of John Dewey, among others, thinking in communication studies has often taken face-to-face conversation to be the heart of democratic life. But face-to-face conversation has been as much honored in aristocracies as in democracies and there are, in fact, two distinctive and contrasting ideals of conversation-the sociable conversation and the problem-solving conversation. Conversation that serves democracy is distinguished not by egalitarianism but by norm-governedness and public-ness, not by spontaneity but by civility, and not by its priority or superiority to print and broadcast media but by its necessary dependence on them. An argument is offered that institutions and norms of democracy give rise to democratic conversations rather than that the inherent democracy of conversation gives rise to politically democratic norms and institutions.
