This study aims to provide a fundamental data for directly injected natural gas engines. To investigate spray and combustion characteristics of natural-gas, optical method(shadowgraph) were applied. Also, combustion pressure, heat-release rate and flame propagation were measured using a constant volume chamber(CVC). In the spray, natural-gas was injected into a combustion chamber at various condition for example, injection pressure, injection duration etc. In the combustion, natural-gas spray was ignited after a certain time by a spark plug located center of CVC. Ignition and combustion processes were analyzed by pressure history and heat-release rate. Also, exhaust gas was sampled and analyzed using a portable gas analyser.

The purpose of this work is to obtain fundamental data about performance of ignition and combustion with high pressure injection of CNG. This experiments were conducted under a constant volume combustion chamber that can change ignition times, injection pressure, then the combustion pressure were investigated. Optical device was used to the visualization of combustion process. This test provided the fundamentals of CNG such as ignition and combustion characteristics under a high pressure direct injection system and the experimental results were also compared with one obtained by using a computer simulation technique.
