        Consumer concerns and federal regulations make pesticide residue analysis an important component of ensuring food safety. Also with growing global trade as well as varying international regulations, the need for multi-analyte screening procedures to efficiently detect violating residues is ever increasing. It is desirable to rapidly and reliably screen samples for a large number of pesticides with sensitive and confirmatory methods as possible. Limitations may exist due to the complexity of sample matrices and differing physicochemical characteristics of contaminating compounds, thus requiring replication of work, to ensure all residues of interest can be targeted. This work reports the development of a screening method for the determination of multi-class and multi-residue pesticides from agricultural processes in complex foodstuffs. All solvent standards, matrix matched standards and sample extracts were analyzed using UPLC coupled with a high sensitivity tandem quadrupole mass spectrometer. Further enhancements in analytical efficiencies were achieved utilizing the functionality of the ESI source versus UniSpray, operated at atmospheric pressure. Exploiting the key functionality of the high velocity droplet stream, ionization efficiency is increased while extending the scope of multiclass analytes screened to excelled levels of detection in a single workflow. Also a novel confirmatory strategy (Product Ion Confirmation Scanning, PICS) was assessed to ensure the method that was acquired using multi reaction monitoring (MRM) on a tandem quadrupole mass spectrometer.
