Vol.14 No.2

The central theme of the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne seems to be a tragic sense of human nature. He is concerned with how a man comes to face his inner self in the course of following his ideals or seeking for knowledge. Selfknowledge, as it often turns out, involves the discovery that man are brothers in sin and that they should be reconciled with human society with understanding and love. This thems of self-knowledge and reconciliation derives from Christianity. The Christian thought which has prevailed in the American mind since the colonial period seems to have contributed to the formation of a tragic idea of man.

      • Edgar Allan Poe

Vol.13 No.1

It is a little over a hundred year since Edgar Allan Poe died. Today, the world thinks of him as a brilliant artist, possessor of one of the most original talents in American letters. But during his lifetime, Poe was insulted, humilated, and misunderstood as a man and a writer. The abuse continued for more than a half century after his death in 1849. But slowly Poe began to find his audience. Translations of his short stories by the great French poet Baudelairo met with enormous success on the continent. Today, Poe is the most widely road of all nineteenth-century American authers. His influence has been enormous. As a result scholars and critice began to recogize his literary value again. When we understand him as a poet, as a novelist and a critic, we can understand rightly Poe's literary point of view.

      • Hemingway

Vol.6 No.-

When we read "The sun Also Rises", " A Farewell to Arms", and "For Whom the Bell Tolls", we can find that Hemingway offers clearly two forms of love in his works. He divides heroes in his works into tow forms. One is the form of Jake, and the other is the form of Romero, Henry and Jordan. Jake has moral code receiving and enduring his co9nditions given him. And Jake suffers very much his sexual wound, but he does not complain. Romero has moral code conquering his conditions. Henry's code in "A Farewell to Arms" is the same code as Romero has. At the time of the retreat of Caporetto. Henry is arrested on the suspicion of spy. Just before being shot dead, he plunges into the river and escapes from the critical moment. After he concludes a separate peace, in order to pursue his happiness he goes to Switzerland with Catherine. The escaping act of Henry differs from the act of Jake completely. Jordan also has the same code as Romero and Henry have. Jordan set up his code to protect the democracy. And he takes part in the civil war of Spain for himself. He has clearly his belief on the killing act. When we consider these points, Hemingway described the nihilistic love in the case of having moral code like Jake and the devoted love in case of having moral code like Romero. Henry and Jordan in his works. in other words, Hemingway described two forms of love - the nihilistic love and the devoted love - in his works.

Vol.3 No.-

After discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, America was governed by the British Empire. Later the American colonies became independent of England. The American set up their government, and their life settled. In the meantime their life improved, and they wanted to have their literature. The early American literature did not escape from the English literature. In the nineteenth century, they had for the first time their independent literature. The American writers have many geographical conditions to describe in their works, such as the beautiful mountains, rivers, sea, lakes and so on. The geographical conditions have much influence on the American literature in today. And America has many races. In these races, the English contributed to the development of the American literature. The spirits governed the American were Cosmopolitanism, Puritanism, Frontier Mind and Mysticism etc. I think that we must know of the geographical, racial and spiritual conditions. By understanding these conditions, in case of reading the American literary works, we can understand their literature well and deeply.

      • D.H. Lawrence

Vol.12 No.1

D.H Lawrence was an egoist. He hated the modern machine civilization and industrialism fiercely. He was faithful to his own self, while he fought against these things. And he asserted that we must be faithful to our own self and achieve the ideal love relationship to fight against them. In his works he described lovers of various types in order to achieve the ideal love relationship. He described hero's tragic love relationship in "Sons and Lovers". After that he described Brangwens succeeded three generations in "The Rainbow" and made two pairs of lover contrasting with each other in "Women in Love" to achieve the new ideal love relationship. After pursuing these thoughts, newly in "Aron's Rode", "Kangaroo" and "The Plumed Serpent" etc. he asserted emphatically superiority of man and exacted mysterious obedience from woman. But he realized it was impossible that if we insisted on ego, we united man and woman. Lawrence thought that 'phallic tenderness' felt from coition between man and woman was true. But we can realize that Lawrence mixed up his own Personal Problems and general problems from his strong Prejudice and obsession about sex, and that the hatred of his machine civilization was almost blind.

Vol.10 No.1

When we are Hemingway's work, we find that he used symbolism in his works. For this symbolism used in his works, scholars often say that is symbolist. But he is not symbolist, but realist. Because he wrote in his works all the things that he saw, felt and experienced in his life. And in order to walloon Lake, Paris, Italy, Spain. Africa, Key West and Cuba. Therefore, his symbolism used in his works is not that he used for the rich meanings of works. Only he used symbolism as the form of literary skill. And in order to raise the effect of symbolism, he used "objective correlative". Observing Hemingway's symbolism, I conclude Hemingway is realist.

Vol.2 No.-

Every literature of Europe began before the time of printing. This was a period of folklore, legends, and ballads. Such a collection of simple songs and stories represents the "childhood" of a literature, in which it is starting to grow up and develop. But American literature had no such childhood. American literature was begun by the colonists who came from England to settle the New Condinent. We can divide Ameracan literature as the following : 1. The Period of the American Colonies ; The writings of this period dealt with religion, morals, and church teachings by Puritanism and Frontier Mind. 2. The Period of the American Revolution ; Because of Independence War, American literature did not develop in this period. 3. Romanticism ; The romantic writers dealt with admiration of nature, individual dignity freedom, right and to sing the rustic life. The active writers of this Period were Irving, Cooper, Emerson, Thoreau and Poe. 4. Realism ; American realism was led by Mark Twain who wrote「The Adventure of Tom Sawyer」,「The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn」etc. with American humour and style. From this period American literature, completely, escaped from the literature of another counntry. 5. Naturalism ; American realism was grown up by naturalists. Naturalists wrote the exposing novels to American society of this period. In this treatise, I described only about the peculiarity of modern American literature. I think what we know of the peculiarity of a period is very important. By understanding the literature of another country, we must know the peculiarity of that peroid well. As a result we can understand their literature deeply.

      • Henigway

Vol.8 No.1

When we read Hemingway's works, we can find that Hemingway offers three Patterns of his heroes in his works. One is the pattern of Nick Adams, another is the pattern of Jake Barnes, a third is the pattern of Frederic Henry. Hemingway's heroes have 'moral code' which Hemingway made in his works in order to express his literary ideas. Nick Adams does not have moral code, but Nick experiences, Violence, evil and death which man has in this world. Jake has moral code receiving and enduring his conditions given him. Henry has moral code conquering his conditions. Hemingway's heroes must conduct acoording to these codes. If heroes and charaters in his works do not observe them, he regard as a coward. Hemingway exoressed all his literary ideas through his heroes. And we can guess Hemingway's heroes are Hemingway himself because all the contents of his works agree with his practical life.
