In the early part of 12th century, Gregorian chant was spread in common society, but the general songs melody began to appear in accordance with the social changing due to crusade, and this general songs melody became familiarthrough many centuries thereafter, by expressing human emotion. Of course it was immature at first time, but it had improved by and by, eventually in the 19th century, it expressed the human dreams and agony. Through the history of many centuries, and by inheriting the senior composers' method of composing, Schubert was the first man who had established the firm tradition of German Lied. He had succeeded in making complete harmony of poem and music, and his Lied gave deep impression to all people in those ages. His Lied made the great development in singing labors song, students' song and songs of wine among the most people in that society, so that the Lied became popular as like the symphonic music or other instrumental melody. On the other hand, Schumann had inherited the tradition of Schubert, and he made more improved lied, finally he succeeded in making the proverb such as "Lied is the marriage of Poem and Music". His miracle and romantic lied and arrived its peak through Brahms and Wolf. As described above, the range of lied was originated by Schubert, and it was inherited by Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, R. Strauss. and it was really great historical fact that Lied was effected by romanticism of German literature in those days. The naive, emotional, elegant, internal combustible, desparate but strong, raculous and elegant lied was the production of complete harmony of the literature and music, and it was not a form but a content of human emotion. We can say that the history of lied is that of human emotion, and it was the origin of the Utopia of Platon. By breaking the traditional customs and forms, lied was put into deeply in the bottom of human emotion, and it expressed the human dignity, thus it contributed for the development of human history. We should recognize the international combustible character or Lied to understand real value of the lied, which is tha complete harmony of the poem and music. And it is quite important thing to study for Schubert and Schumann comparatively to understand the Lied. We can say that Lied is the pronoun of human spirit, and we can find real human being in Lied.
