        Performance Analysis of Hybrid SIMO-RF/FSO Communication System with Fixed Gain AF Relay

        This paper investigates the performance of a hybrid single input multiple output radio frequency/free-space optics (SIMO-RF/FSO) communication system. Each SIMO-RF link is modeled as an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh distribution, while the FSO link follows a generalized Málaga (M) distribution. Considering the fixed gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relay and misalignment errors, novel expressions for the outage probability (OP), average bit error rate (ABER) and average capacity are derived. Numerical results show that atmospheric turbulence and misalignment errors can seriously impair the system performance, and the hybrid RF/FSO communication system using SIMO-RF links can greatly improve system performance. We also analyze system performance under different types of modulation schemes. Numerical results are verified by Monte Carlo simulations.

        Joint Transmission Slot Assignment, FSO Links Allocation and Power Control for Hybrid RF/FSO Wireless Mesh Networks

        Hybrid radio frequency/free space optical (RF/FSO) wireless mesh networks have attracted increasingattention for they can overcome the limitations of RF and FSO communications and significantly increasethe throughput of wireless mesh networks (WMNs). In this article, a resource assignment optimizationscheme is proposed for hybrid RF/FSO wireless mesh networks. The optimization framework is proposedfor the objective of maximizing throughput of overall hybrid networks through joint transmission slotassignment, FSO links allocation and power control with the consideration of the fading nature of RF andFSO links. The scheme is formulated as an instance of mixed integer linear program (MILP) and the optimalsolutions are provided using CPLEX and Gurobi optimizers. How to choose the appropriate optimizer isdiscussed by comparing their performance. Numerous simulations are done to demonstrate that theperformance of our optimization scheme is much better than the current case of having the same topology.

        Joint Routing and Channel Assignment in Multi-rate Wireless Mesh Networks

        To mitigate the performance degradation caused by performance anomaly, a number of channel assignment algorithms have been proposed for multi-rate wireless mesh networks. However, network conditions have not been fully considered for routing process in these algorithms. In this paper, a joint scheme called Multi-rate Dijkstra`s Shortest path - Rate Separated (MDSRS) is proposed, combining routing metrics and channel assignment algorithm. In MDSRS, the routing metric are determined through the synthesized deliberations of link costs and rate matches; then the rate separated channel assignment is operated based on the determined routing metric. In this way, the competitions between high and low rate links are avoided, and performance anomaly problem is settled, and the network capacity is efficiently improved. Theoretical analysis and NS-3 simulation results indicate that, the proposed MDSRS can significantly improve the network throughput, and decrease the average end-to-end delay as well as packet loss probability. Performance improvements could be achieved even in the heavy load network conditions.
