A Concept Map-Based Support System for English Language Teaching

본 논문은 학습자의 지식 정도를 파악하는 진단평가를 실시하고, 그 결과를 이용하여 사용자 프로파일을 생성하여, 동일 학급에 속한 학습자간 균형 있는 영어 교육을 지원하기 위한 시스템을 제안한다. 교사는 진단평가를 통하여 학생들의 선행 지식에 대한 이해 정도를 파악하고, 개별 학생에게 적절한 보충 학습 자료를 제공함으로써, 학습자간 선행 지식 상의 균형을 유지하도록 하여, 학생들이 수업에 집중할 수 있도록 한다. 제안된 시스템은 개념도 모듈, 평가 모듈, 사용자 프로파일 모듈로 이루어져있다. 개념도 모듈은 학생에게 교습할 내용으로서의 개념과 이 개념들의 연관 관계로 구성 된다. 본 연구에서 개념 모듈은 초등학교 4학년 영어 교육과정을 바탕으로 하였으며, 해당 교육과정에 포함되는 영어 문법과 그들 사이의 관계성으로 이루어졌다. 평가 모듈은 진단평가 문제와 관련 정보를 포함하며, 사용자 프로파일은 학습자에 관한 일반 정보와 평가 모듈 안에 있는 문제에 대한 학습자의 평가 결과를 포함한다. 진단평가는 각 단원이 시작되기 전 수행되고 평가 결과에 따라 사용자 프로파일이 동적으로 갱신된다. 본 연구에서 제안한 개념도 기반 교육 지원 시스템은 우리나라 교육과정에 실제적으로 이용될 수 있도록 구현되었으며, 구조적 제약성이나 가정을 많이 포함하고 있지 않기에, 본 시스템은 영어뿐만 아니라 전달 지식을 개념도로 표현이 가능한 모든 과목에 적용할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. This paper proposes a support system for English language education intended to balance English classrooms regarding learners' English proficiency. A pre-test is used to elucidate learners' specific strengths and weaknesses in English, with the test results forming the basis of user profiles for each learner in the classroom. With those results, English teachers are able to balance their classrooms by targeting specific deficiencies with supplementary practice that allows learners to focus before and during upcoming lessons. Three modules comprise the proposed system: a concept map module that is made up of the relationships between grammar concepts from the English curriculum of a grade four elementary class; an evaluation module consisting of the aforementioned pre-test and information regarding the test questions; and a user profile module containing the results of the pre-test and general information for each user. As learners take the pre-tests in advance of upcoming concepts to be learned, the user profile also updates the database as learners acquire knowledge of new concepts and advance towards more complex grammatical stages of the concept map. Although the proposed system is designed for practical application in conjunction with an English curriculum in Korea, it can also be employed within other fields as a way for teachers to recommend the customized practice necessary to enhance learning of the concepts intrinsic to those fields.
