The meaning of Korean prophetic songs(讖謠) can be divided into two categories: the one is the primary and original meaning among the populace without concern of any historical events while the other is the secondary and ex post facto meaning added by the aristocracy after a certain occurrence usually related to a serious political matter. This paper is aimed at looking into the former - the primary meaning that has been paid less attention to. Several lyrics of Korean prophetic songs were translated and recorded in classical Chinese, but much more were transcribed with Chinese characters borrowed in both their sound and meaning. Therefore, I tried in this paper to confirm the literal significance of each prophetic song by exactly recomposing the original Korean vernacular lyric from its transcriptions or translations and to analyze what features of each song the aristocracy concentrated their attention on. Ayamayo, which has been told to imply the commonality’s prediction of their atrocious king Chunghye’s miserable death on his way to China, can be construed in fact as a short love song expressing the wrench of parting. Namsanyo seems to have had concern with the complaint of the people who were mobilized to build the protective walls of Seoul in the reign of King Taejo rather than with the forecast for influential politicians Jeong Dojeon and Nam Eun’s sudden downfall. Similarly, Sumukmukyo looks like a simple children’s song calling a hawk and mimicking its voice without any political outlooks. Considering its context,Makjwaripyeongyo can be interpreted as a song reflecting Korean common people’s constant desire for a hero of humble birth who is able to emancipate them from the state of slavery instead of their longing for a Chinese general Li Rusong during the Japanese invasion of Korea in the late sixteenth century. * Hallym University 참요(讖謠)의 원의(原義)에 대한 고찰 37Besides, Mangmadayo, Usodayo, Chapaljayo, and Hwarojangsayo also seems to have been mere brief folk songs irrelevant to any predictions. In conclusion, when studying the features of prophetic songs, we firstly need to examine their primary and original meaning because only after such a careful examination, it is also possible to reasonably review the aristocracy’s interpretations of them. 참요의 의미는, 특정한 역사적 계기와는 관계없이 민중들 사이에서 떠돌던 때의 일차적.본래적 의미와 사건이 발생한 후 식자층에 의해 부여된 이차적.사후적 의미로 분리하여 파악해야 할 필요가 있다. 본고에서는 종래의 연구에서 비교적 소홀히 다루어졌던 전자의 의미를 해명하는 데 중점을 두었다. 이를 위해서 차자표기 또는 한역의 방식으로 전하는 노래들의 원 형태를 재구함으로써 그 본래 의미를 추정하고, 해당 노래의어떠한 특질이 식자들에 의해 참요적 성격으로 규정되었는지를 밝혀내고자 하였다. 충혜왕에 대한 백성들의 조롱과 저주가 묻어나는 작품으로 일컬어져 온 <아야마요>의 경우, 떠나는 이를 향한 서러운 마음과 하염없는 기약이 원래 가사의 뜻이라 풀이되며, 따라서 <가시리>.<서경별곡>류의 속요와 그 정조가 잇닿아 있다고 논의하였다. 정도전과 남은의 비극적 종말을 예언한 노래로 지목되어 온 <남산요>는 도성 축조에동원된 백성들의 세태비판요이었을 가능성이 높고, 중종의 등극을 선견하였다는 <수묵묵요> 역시 차자표기를 다시 풀어 보면 매를 부르면서 장난을 거는 단순한 유희요이었을 것으로 짐작된다. 또한 명 제독 이여송의 도하를 예언한 노래로 해석된 <막좌리평요>의 경우, 아기장수설화와 연계되는 특징들이 문면에서 여럿 발견되는 만큼 본래는평민영웅의 출현을 염원한 노래이었으리라는 추정이 가능하다. 그밖에 <망마다요>,<우소다요>, <차팔자요>, <화로장사요> 등도 단순한 신세한탄이나 일상적 사건에 대한 푸념이 담긴 짤막한 노래이었을 것이다. 참요는 대개 백성들 사이에서 자연스럽게 불리어 온 노래이자 미래에 대한 선견을나타내는 노래라는 두 가지 의의를 지니는 것으로 인식되지만, 그러한 시각이 언제나적확하다고 단정하기는 어렵다. 때로 참요란 백성들의 노래이기보다는 그것에 의미를부여한 위정자들의 노래에 가깝기도 하고, 민의의 자연스러운 발현이기보다는 민의가* 한림대학교 / e-mail : nakimsw@hanmail.net 6 Journal of Korean Culture 24재해석되거나 과장 또는 훼절된 결과물일 수 있으며, 미래를 선견하기보다는 사건이발생된 이후의 시점에서 그 사건을 추인하는 성격의 노래로 파악해야 할 필요성도 존재한다는 것이다. 참요의 의미를 일차적.본래적 의미와 이차적.사후적 의미로 분리하여 다루어야한다는 본고의 당초 방침은 바로 이 같은 소견에 입각하여 설정된 것이거니와, 전자의의미, 즉 참요의 민요적 원의가 정교하게 분석되지 않고서는 참요의 생성이나 소통과직접 잇닿아 있는 후자의 의미 역시도 온전히 해명되기 어렵다는 점에 유념해야 할 필요가 있다고 생각한다. 본고는 바로 그러한 입론을 실제 작품에 적용해 보고자 한 한가지 시도로서의 의의를 지닌다.
