이 연구는 울산 지역 조직노동자의 계급의식을 설명하는 요인들을 규명하고 그 상대적 중요성을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기존에 국내의 노동자 계급의식 연구들이 설명변수의 제한성, 이론적 모형의 결여, 분석방법의 한계 등의 문제를 안고 있다면, 이 논문은 계급의식의 설명요인들을 다변화하고 가설적인 이론적 모형을 구성한 후 검증을 수행하였다. 울산 지역 조직노동자를 모집단으로 한 설문조사 자료를 분석한 결과, 노동계급의 공동체적 하위문화가 발달하여 노동계급 간 유유상종 경향이 높을수록 계급의식이 발달한다는 ‘노동계급 공동체’ 가설이 가장 뚜렷하게 지지되었다. 이에 반해 중공업 생산직 육체노동자라는 직업 범주와 민주노총이라는 상급단체 범주는 통계적으로 유의미하지 않았다. 그 밖에 계급의식에 유의미한 영향을 미친 변수들은 주택의 소유, 직업의 불안정성 인식, 사업체 규모, 노조간부 경험 등이었다. 결론적으로 계급의식 형성에 직업 및 노조 요인보다는, 노동자의 공동체적 사회관계와 문화적 생활 형식들이 더 중요한 요인으로 나타났는데, 이러한 발견은 기존의 국내 연구에서 확인되지 않은 것이다. 이것은 앞으로 한국의 노동계급 의식 연구에서 노동자의 생활세계에 대한 문화적 접근이 필요함을 시사한다. The purpose of this article is to investigate main factors explaining class consciousness of the organized workers. While insufficient independent variables, lack of theoretical model, and narrow methods of analysis are the problems being faced by previous researches on class consciousness of Korean workers, we formulate hypotheses about the formation of working-class consciousness, and then test their empirical validity. As a result, our empirical test sheds biggest credibility to ‘the working-class community’ proposition. However, empirical effects of being blue-collar workers in heavy industry or of membership of the KCTU turn out to be insignificant in our model of analysis. In addition, variables like homeownership, perceived occupational insecurity, membership of large-scale establishment, career as the union officers have significant effects on the level of class consciousness. Contrary to the prevailing view, we propose that communal social relationship and cultural life-forms of the working-class members are more significant factors rather than occupational characteristic or membership of certain trade unions to explain the level of class consciousness of workers.
