이 논문은 오정희 「옛우물」이 사랑하는 이의 죽음을 애도하는 형식을 갖고 있다고 보고, 이 소설에 나타난 서사 배치, 공간 이동 과정과 심리적 변모, 존재와 죽음, 시간에 대한 인식 등을 분석하였다. 이 소설에서는 공간의 이동에 따라 죽음과 대면하고, 자신의 고통을 객관화하면서 삶과 죽음, 과거와 현재가 서로 중첩되어 있다는 인식의 전환을 만들어가는 과정을 통해 사랑하는 이의 죽음을 수용해 나가고 있었다. 「옛우물」은 사랑하는 이에게 쏟았던 리비도를 소진한다는 점에서 리비도의 회수를 말하는 프로이트식 애도에 맞지 않으며, 자아 상실 상태에 있으면서도 자기 비하와 같은 특징이 나타나지 않는다는 점에서 우울증적 경향으로 설명하기 어렵다. 「옛우물」의 애도가 우울증적 경향에서 벗어날 수 있었던 이유는 존재, 죽음, 시간에 대한 인식에서 찾을 수 있다. 죽음을 피할 수 없는 존재에 대한 인식과 죽음을 하나의 세계와의 단절이면서 또 다른 세계로의 이행으로 바라보는 지속의 시간관은 죽음 이후의 세계를 가능하게 하여 죽은 이를 옛우물 속에 사는 금빛 잉어와 같은 존재로 변이시킨다. 이를 통해 이 소설의 애도가 단지 사랑하는 이의 죽음을 수용하는 것을 넘어서서 죽은 이가 영원한 시간 속에 살게 하는 상상까지 나아가고 있음을 알 수 있다. This paper deemed 「Old Well」 written by O Jeonghi to have a style of mourning a beloved person and analyzed the arrange of narrative, space movement course and psychological transfiguration, existence and death, and recognition in time implicated in the novel. The unique point in this mourning type implicated in 「Old Well」 was that the character accepted death of a beloved person after a symbolic suggestion by which the character entered the world of death together with the beloved person and put death of beloved person in the stream of continuous stream of time by changing death into the subject about ‘When the beloved person died’. The point of view was that severance from the world might be a transition to the other world under the assumption of continuous time that included the period before birth as well as that after death. This point of view about time enabled one to think of the world after death and changed the dead person into a golden-gleam carp which lived in the old well. It also enabled one to finish mourning by which the character accepted the dead person.
