이 글에서는 현재의 관점에서 보편적 담론으로 인식되고 있는 우리 시대의 건강 담론에 대한 이해의 과정 및 체험이 보편적인 것인지 아니면 우리 시대에 특수한 담론에 불과할 뿐인지를 푸코의 담론이론을 통해 접근해봄으로써 의료화를 매개로한 우리 시대의 건강담론이 형성하는 이 시대의 현상들을 탐색하며 그 극복 가능성을 푸코의 후기 사상을 통해 모색해보고자 한다. 즉, 지배 담론에 저항할 수 있는 주체의 공간을 열어 비판적 성찰을 통한 새로운 사유와 실천의 가능성을 찾아보고자 한다. 종래의 의료 비판이 제기하는 문제와 그 목적을 구명하고 푸코의 사상적 틀 내에서 이러한 문제를 다르게 조망하는 것은 큰 생산적 의미가 있을 것으로 보인다. 이는 종래의 의료화 비판가들이 제기하는 문제 틀의 위치를 다른 각도에서 바라볼 수 있게 하고 그러한 대안이 갖는 한계지점을 명료히 할 수 있기 때문이다. 또한 푸코의 후기 사상을 통해 제시된 자기 배려의 기술을 통해 기존의 제도와 틀에 저항할 수 있는 발판을 마련하여 자율성의 영역을 확보하는 것은 진행 중인 의료화 현상을 보다 주체적으로 접근할 수 있게 도와준다. 물론 이런 방법을 통한 자율성 회복이 그 실천과정에서 어떤 새로운 문제들을 파생시킬지는 앞으로 더 깊이 검토해나가야 할 것으로 보인다. The purpose of this study is to examine whether the discourse on health is specifically valid to our time or universally valid to all the times. By applying Foucault’s theory of discourse and genealogical method to the discourse on health we can analyze the meaning and structure of health discourse in our time. We can explore perceptions, understandings, and experiences of health of which the discourses on health in different historical times have been composed. Through examination of many different discourses of health in different times with help of Foucault’s theory of discourse we can find a way of understanding the modes of which meanings of human beings’ health have been socially defined and constructed by societies in different times. In this paper, I interrogate the notion of medicalization and explore the ways that a Foucault’s perspective may contribute to understandings of power in relation to medical knowledge and prctice and the medical encounter. I would argue that insights derived from a technology of the self informed by Foucault’s later work on the practices of the self may go some way to meet this problem.
