이 논문은 한국의 청소년기를 근대성, 특히 한국 특유의 ‘압축적 근대성’을 배경으로 하여 가족과 사회에서 청소년 지위의 구조적 전환을 중심으로 분석하였다. 한국 사회에서 압축적 근대성은 청소년기의 ‘사회각축장’(socially contested terrain)화를 야기했으며, 이로 인해 주류 사회ㆍ정치적 담론에서 청소년 문제는 투명하고 객관적으로 다루어지기보다는 여러 사회주체들의 이해와 이념을 반영해 다반사로 왜곡되었다. 이 가운데, 학교를 주축으로 한 국가-학교-가족의 동맹적 청소년기 관리체계는 한국의 산업화 시대를 구가하였으나 세기말의 급격한 경제적, 사회적, 정치적 변화의 격랑 속에서 심각하게 약화되기 시작했다. 특히 새로운 경제개발 패러다임으로서 추진된 정보화는 인터넷 등 새로운 정보통신공간의 확산을 통해 청소년 집단으로 하여금 주도적 소비집단, 창조적 문화집단, 진보적 정치집단으로서의 중대한 입지를 차지하도록 만들었다. 청소년들의 이러한 사회적 입지 확립으로 청소년기에 대한 학교의 영향력이 결정적으로 감소하게 되었을 뿐 아니라 한국의 정치ㆍ사회 질서 자체가 개혁적으로 재편되는 결과가 나타났다. 21세기 한국의 청소년기는 한편으로 국가-기업-매체로 구성된 정보화동맹과의 밀접한 상호작용 속에 전개되고 다른 한편으로 국가-학교-가족의 학력동맹이 갖고 있는 잔존 영향력에 여전히 노출됨으로써 매우 복잡한 변화를 겪고 있다. This paper analyzes puberty in South Korea focusing on the structural transitions of the familial and social status of youth under compressed modernity. In South Korea, compressed modernity has involved a process which makes puberty a socially contested terrain. Consequently, in mainstream social and political discourse, the youth issue has not been dealt with transparently or objectively, but frequently distorted reflecting interests and ideologies of various social groups. Among others, the puberty regime managed by the state-school-family alliance pivoting around public education was predominant in the industrialization era, but its efficacy has been critically declining under the tumultous economic, social, and political transformations at the turn of the century. In particular, informatization, while pursued as a new developmental paradigm, has enabled youth to occupy a crucial position as main consumer, cultural creator, and progressive citizen on the basis of newly established and expanded spaces of information and communication - including, above all, internet. This social empowerment of youth has dealt a critical blow to the authority of school, and even triggered progressive reforms in the political and social order. In the early 21st century, puberty in South Korea undergoes extremely complex transitions as it closely interacts with the informatization alliance of state-industry-media, on the one hand, and is still exposed to the lingering influence of the schooling alliance of state-family-school, on the other hand.
