한국 텔레비전 드라마의 환상성-1990년대 이후의 미니시리즈를 중심으로-

텔레비전 드라마에서 환상물은 비현실적 세계의 시청각적 재현으로 성립한다. 한국의 텔레비전 드라마에서 이러한 정의에 부합하는 환상물은 크게 1990년대를 기점으로 갈린다. 1980년대까지는 주로 기담괴설에 기댄 <전설의 고향>이 텔레비전을 통해 마주할 수 있는 거의 유일무이한 한국적 환상물이었다. 하지만 이 시기 텔레비전에는 다른 국적의 환상물이 엄존하고 있었다. 그것은 미국으로 대표되는 일련의 외화 시리즈이다. 1980~90년대의 외국 드라마는 현실적인 것과 환상적인 것을 막론하고 한국 드라마의 생산과 소비에 있어서 일종의 참고서와도 같았다. 외국의 드라마가 현란하게 재현하는 극적 사건과 세계에 대한 학습은 곧 한국 드라마 스펙트럼의 확장으로 이어졌기 때문이다. 1990년대 이후 한국 텔레비전 드라마에서 환상물의 추이는 실험(1990년대)과 안착(2000년대)과 확산(2010년대)으로 요약된다. 이는 1980년대까지의 레퍼토리를 저본으로 한 혼융, 즉 <전설의 고향>을 요체로 하는 동양적/고전적 환상의 ‘계승’과 일련의 외화 시리즈에 대한 학습을 거친 서양적/현대적 환상의 ‘모방’이라는 문화적 혼종의 결과였다. 이러한 계승과 모방을 통해 한국의 텔레비전 드라마에서 환상물은 < M >이 방영된 1994년으로부터 <미스터 백>이 방영되고 있는 2014년 현재에 이르는 20여 년 동안 미니시리즈 51편과 단막극 시리즈 8편 등이 제작되고 방영되었다. 총 59편에 달하는 1990년대 이후의 환상물 연표는 한국 텔레비전 드라마에서 환상적인 것이 지닌 몇 가지 특징을 보여준다. ① 지상파와 케이블을 망라한 환상물의 보편화, ② 환상의 화소로서 ‘인간’과 ‘시간’에 대한 유다른 선호, ③ 유형으로서의 ‘초능력’과 ‘타임슬립’의 강세, ④ 현실과 전혀 다른 2차 세계의 부재 등이 그것이다. 한국의 환상물은 창작과 제작 그리고 방영과 시청에 수반되는 여러 가지 난제로 인해 생면부지의 환상이라고 할 수 있는 2차 세계의 창조보다는 현실 세계의 인간과 시간을 통해 발생하는 국지적 환상의 창출에 주력해 온 셈이다. 그럼에도 한국 텔레비전 드라마에서 환상적 환영은 현실의 부재와 상실을 치유하는 극적 상상으로서 현실에서 면면히 환영받고 있다. Fantasy creation in television dramas are produced by an audiovisual representation of unrealistic world. Fantasy creation which corresponds to such a definition in Korean television dramas is largely divided from the base point of the 1990s. Hometown of legend, which focused on weird stories and strange rumors happened until the 1980s was an almost unique Korean-style fantasy creation that could be watched in television. However, such a creation from other nationalities existed really in television during such a period. It was a set of foreign film series represented by the United States. Foreign dramas in the 1980s and 1990s were like a sort of reference book in producing and consuming Korean dramas regardless of realistic or fantastic because dramatic events brilliantly reproduced in foreign dramas and learning of the world led to the extended spectrum of Korean drama. The trends in fantasy creation in Korean television dramas since the 1990s can be summed up into experiment(1990s), safe arrival(2000s), and spread(2010s). This was a result of mixed-melting of the repertoires created till the 1980s as original script, in other words, cultural mixing of ‘succession’ of oriental/classical fantasy starting with Hometown of legend and ‘imitation’ of western/modern fantasy that went through the learning of a series of foreign film. Through such a succession and imitation, fantasy creation in Korean television dramas are manufactured and broadcasted including 51 mini-series and 8 one-act-play series from the year of 1994 when M was broadcast to the year of 2014 when Mr. Back was aired for more than 20 years. The chronological table of fantasy creation since the 1990s amounting to a total of 59 plays shows several characteristics of fantastic things in Korean television dramas:a. universalization of fantasy creation embracing terrestial broadcasting and cable television, b. different signals of ‘human being’ and ‘time’ as fantastic picture elements, c. predominance of ‘supernatural power’ and ‘time slip’ as pattern, and d. lack of the 2nd world totally different from the reality. Fantasy creation in Korea has focused on creating local fantasy occurred through human being and time of the real world rather than creating the 2nd world which can be called as unknown fantasy due to various difficulties accompanied by creation, manufacturing, broadcasting, and watching. Nevertheless, fantastic illusion in Korean television dramas is welcomed ceaselessly as dramatic imagination that heals the lack and loss of reality.
