Anti-overload clutch is a very important element to prevent the excessive belt tension in the motorized retractor of the smart seat belt. It generates slipping motion whenever the belt tension becomes larger than a certain critical value. and protects passengers from injuries. In this study, finite element analysis was performed to investigate the operating torque of the anti-overload clutch. Analysis results are compared with the measured data by torque measuring system. The goal of this study is to develop an anti-overload clutch satisfying the regulation about the belt tension and durability limitation.

Reliability of a driving mechanism that includes one-way clutch between the driving motor and webbing is directly linked to the safety of passenger. In this research, conditions for locking one-way clutch and also conditions for sustaining locking are theoretically investigated. the operation of a motorized retractor under realistic conditions is simulated in order to validate the proposed retractor design.

A retractor is the major component of a seatbelt system that restraints passengers by locking the movement of webbing. Recently, in order to increase the effectiveness of seatbelt systems, motorized retractors that remove slack and correct passenger posture just before airbag expansion when collision is predicted are widely used. Key component of motorized retractors is the one-way clutch that engages and disengages the winding action of webbing according to the direction of motor revolution. Analytical investigation of action of the one-way clutch mechanism has been carried out to figure out conditions for one-way locking, and to study the effect of various kinematic and dynamic design variables of one-way clutch. Using combination of ADAMS and LifeMOD soft-wares, dynamic simulation of operation of motorized retractors including Hybrid-III dummy model has been carried out to evaluate the performance of the motorized retractors in various crash scenarios.

In the motorized retractor of the smart seat belt system, anti-overload clutch is a very important element to prevent the excessive belt tensional force. Anti-overload clutch is the essential device to protect drivers from chest damage by the excessive belt tension. It generates slipping motion under excessive webbing moment and the belt tensional force is limited below critical value. In this study, slipping mechanism in the antioverload clutch is investigated by analysis and experiment. On the prototype model, finite element analysis is performed to identify the slipping condition and to determine the critical load. Analysis result is compared with the experimental result and the validity of the analysis model is verified. The purpose of the study is to provide the analytical background for the systematic design of the anti-overload clutch mechanism

The finite element analysis is performed to identify the slipping condition of anti-overload clutch and to determine the critical load analytically. The experiment is performed to confirm the critical load and durability of the designed models. The goal of this study is to develop an anti-overload clutch satisfying regulations about limitations of the belt tension and durability.
