        臺灣總督府의 ‘理蕃政策’과 원주민학살

        김영신 원광대학교 한중관계연구원 2023 韓中關係硏究 Vol.9 No.3

On October 27, 1930, a commemorative sports day was scheduled to be held at Wushe Elementary School located in Taichung. At around 8 a.m. on the same day, among the 11 indigenous villages in the Musa area, the natives of 6 villages that responded to the rebellion raided the event and killed about 100 Japanese. In retaliation for this, the Japanese Government-General mobilized thousands of military guards to subdue the indigenous villages that participated in the rebellion and brutally kill hundreds of them. Although it occurred last in the history of the anti-Japanese struggle in Taiwan, this event, which was the most involved and tragic, is called ‘Wushe incident’. The Seediq tribe, which caused the incident, is a lineage of the Taoist aboriginal people who mainly lived in the central part of Taiwan’s Central Mountains. Why did those who are famous as the most courageous tribe among the primitive people of the mountains cause the samurai incident? It leads to a too simplistic conclusion to explain the cause of the incident just because they were belligerent and brave. The samurai incident was a tragic ending caused by a combination of accident and misfortune. The reason for this lies in this policy, the indigenous policy that the Japanese Government-General has conducted since the takeover of Taiwan. The cause was the oppression and discrimination inflicted on the natives of the Wushe area, and the resistance and struggle of the natives. The Taiwan Government-General called the warrior aboriginal rebellion an ‘extraordinary incident’. This is just an excuse for the Japanese colonial rulers to evade responsibility. Considering various records and circumstances, the Musa Incident was a ‘resistance’ carefully prepared by the natives. The Wushe Incident, a representative example of the armed resistance of indigenous peoples in Taiwan, was the result of the intensification of the contradictions caused by the predatory nature of Japanese colonial rule and the cultural assimilation movement.
