        NI-HF ALLOYS : A NEW BONDING MATERIAL FRO SINGLE CRYSTAL SUPERALLOYS

        Hf is a potential melting point depressant in the interlayer alloys used for brazing. The concentration of Hf in the interdendrites in the later stage of solidifcation for Hf-bearing superalloys is more than 10wt%. It may be considered that dendrites formed in the early solidification are brazed by interdendritic Hf-rich melts, therefore, the composition of the melts may be utilized as essential composition for the interlayer alloy. Eventually, the alloy containing Ni-18.6Co-4.5Cr-4.7W-25.6Hf(wt%) has been developed. The melting range of this alloy is $1195-1232^{\circ}C$. Microstructure of the ribbon prepared by the interlayer alloy consists of ${\gamma}+Ni_7Hf_2$ eutectic. The two phases have orientation relationship of $(001)_{Ni7Hf2}//(111)_{\gamma}, [101]_{Ni7Hf2}//[112]_{\gamma}$. Using the above ribbon material, transient liquid-phase(TLP) bonding of $1270^{\circ}C/48h$ was performed. During isothermal solidification of the bond, the content of Al and Ti increases and concentration of Hf decreases. Large amount of ${\gamma}+{\gamma}'$ eutectic formed which gets large quantity of Hf and restrains the formation of Hf-rich intermentallic compound in the bond. As a result, bonding free of Si and B for single crystal superalloys can be realized.
