A mobile phone guide: spatial, personal, and social experience for cultural heritage

<P>We have built a mobile phone-based guide system to strengthen the user experience in a cultural heritage site by supporting spatial awareness, personalization, and social connectedness. Our mobile phone guide implemented on a Java-enabled mobile phone provides both audio and visual content that is tailored by tracking user movement with GPS, collecting various user inputs and demographics, and allowing for socially acceptable eavesdropping via wireless networking. We applied our system to a cemetery site and present the results of a user study. We also conducted a performance evaluation to verify the effectiveness of both content filtering in personalization and content synchronization in social connectedness. Spatially, our results validated that our system provided a satisfying physical exploration of historic space. With respect to personalization, the content presented to visitors was well tailored to their real-time feedback over the course of their visit. Socially, the effectiveness of our sharing interface motivated visitors to frequently synchronize content among themselves. Our system will hopefully broaden the appeal of mobile phones as electronic tour guides providing adequate support for spatial awareness, personalization, and shared group experiences.</P>

In the design of mobile entertainment systems for historical heritage sites, it is important to not only overcome technical challenges imposed by power requirements, computation limits, and connectivity, but to support group experiences and consider users preferences for situated media consumption. Cultural heritage sites provide an opportunity to entertain and educate the public through the use of mobile media. The proposed system implemented on a Javaenabled mobile phone provides both audio and visual content that is tailored by tracking user movement with GPS, collecting various user inputs and demographics, and allowing for socially acceptable eavesdropping via wireless networking. By designing for the spatial, personal, and social considerations of the environment, we aim to help users navigate the diverse topology of the space and consume the vast quantities of historical media. 역사적 문화 유적지를 위한 모바일 엔터테인먼트 시스템의 디자인에 있어서 전력요구사항, 컴퓨팅 능력, 및 네트웍 등의 연결성 등에 의해 제기되는 기술적인 난제들을 극복하는 것도 중요하지만 현장에 풍부하게 내재되어 있는 미디어 컨텐츠의 효율적 소비를 위한 그룹 경험의 공유를 지원하고 방문객 개인의 선호도를 고려하는 것 또한 매우 중요하다. 문화유적지는 모바일 미디어의 활용을 통하여 대중을 엔터테인하고 교육할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. Java-enabled 모바일 폰 위에 구현한 본 시스템은 방문객의 유적지 방문 경험의 극대화를 위하여 오디오와 비쥬얼한 컨텐트를 모두 제공한다. 이때 제공되는 컨텐츠는 GPS 를 통하여 사용자 움직임를 트래킹하고 사용자 기본 프로파일정보와 폰 인터페이스를 통한 다양한 입력 및 피드백값들을 수집 및 활용하며, 무선 네트웍을 통한 사회적으로 용인이 가능한 그룹사용자간의 컨텐츠 엿듣기 기능을 고려함으로써 방문객의 니즈에 잘 맞춰진 컨텐츠이다. 본 논문에서는 문화 유적지 환경의 공간적, 개인적, 그리고 사회적 요소를 고려함으로써 방문객이 그 공간의 다양한 구조를 네비게이션하고, 방대한 양의 역사적 문화적 의미를 내포하는 미디어 컨텐츠를 소비하는데 도움을 주려는 데 그 목적을 두고 있다.

<P>In this letter, we propose a enhanced framework for a Personalized User Interface (PUI). This framework allows users to access and customize virtual objects in virtual environments in the sense of sharing user centric context with virtual objects. The proposed framework is enhanced by integrating a unified context-aware application for virtual environments (vr-UCAM 1.5) into virtual objects in the PUI framework. It allows a virtual object to receive context from both real and virtual environments, to decide responses based on context and if-then rules, and to communicate with other objects individually. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, we applied it to a virtual heritage system. Experimental results show that we enhance the accessibility and the customizability of virtual objects through the PUI. The proposed framework is expected to play an important role in VR applications such as education, entertainment, and storytelling.</P>
