Numerical Analysis of Self-Piercing Riveting of CFRP and Al Alloy

Recently, various materials have been applied to the vehicle body in order to reduce weight in the automobile business, such as Electrical Vehicle (EV). Joining technology is required to apply various materials to the vehicle body, and the most widely used mechanical joining technology in the automobile business is Self-Piercing Riveting (SPR). In this study, a numerical simulation was performed on the SPR joining process of Al alloy plate and composite material with low weight compared to the recent high strength. For the SPR process, the unidirectional fiber composite is placed on the aluminum alloy sheet. In this numerical analysis model, the fracture of the composite material pierced during the SPR process is implemented in the top sheet and the deformation is implemented in the rivet and bottom sheet. The numerical analysis model can predicts the joint state and proposes a direction to improve the joint quality by changing the shape of the materials and tools that enter the process.
