A ZCT Double-Ended Flyback Converter with Low EMI

Yazdani, Mohammad Rouhollah,Rahmani, Saeid,Mohammadi, Mehdi The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2015 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.15 No.3

In this paper, a zero current transition (ZCT) double-ended flyback converter is proposed. All of the switching elements act under soft switching conditions and the voltage stress of the main switches is limited to the input voltage due to the innate behavior of the double-ended flyback converter. Providing soft switching conditions and clamping the voltage stress improves the efficiency and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). The Proposed converter is analyzed in detail and its operating modes are discussed in detail. Experimental results are presented to verify the theoretical predictions. Moreover, the conducted electromagnetic emissions of the proposed ZCT double-ended flyback converter are measured to show another merit of the proposed converter in addition to providing soft switching conditions. The measured electromagnetic interference (EMI) of the proposed converter demonstrates that its EMI is lower than the conventional double-ended flyback converter. Furthermore, two simple and cost effective EMI reduction methods are applied to satisfy the EMC standard.

      • Genistein Suppression of Matrix Metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) Expression in Mesenchymal Stem Cell Like Cells Isolated from High and Low Grade Gliomas

Yazdani, Yasaman,Rad, Mohammad Reza Sharifi,Taghipour, Mousa,Chenari, Nooshafarin,Ghaderi, Abbas,Razmkhah, Mahboobeh Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.12

Objective: Brain tumors cause great mortality and morbidity worldwide, and success rates with surgical treatment remain very low. Several recent studies have focused on introduction of novel effective medical therapeutic approaches. Genistein is a member of the isoflavonoid family which has proved to exert anticancer effects. Here we assessed the effects of genistein on the expression of MMP-2 and VEGF in low and high grade gliomas in vitro. Materials and Methods: High and low grade glioma tumor tissue samples were obtained from a total of 16 patients, washed with PBS, cut into small pieces, digested with collagenase type I and cultured in DMEM containing 10% FBS. When cells reached passage 3, they were exposed to genistein and MMP-2 and VEGF gene transcripts were determined by quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR). Results: Expression of MMP-2 demonstrated 580-fold reduction in expression in low grade glioma cells post treatment with genistein compared to untreated cells (P value= 0.05). In cells derived from high grade lesions, expression of MMP-2 was 2-fold lower than in controls (P value> 0.05). Genistein caused a 4.7-fold reduction in VEGF transcript in high grade glioma cells (P value> 0.05) but no effects were evident in low grade glioma cells. Conclusion. Based on the data of the present study, low grade glioma cells appear much more sensitive to genistein and this isoflavone might offer an appropriate therapeutic intervention in these patients. Further investigation of this possibility is clearly warranted.

Nonlinear consolidation of soft clays subjected to cyclic loading - Part I: theory

        Yazdani, Hessam,Toufigh, Mohammad Mohsen Techno-Press 2012 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.4 No.4

In this paper, utilizing void ratio-effective stress and void ratio-permeability relationships, a system of two nonlinear partial differential equations is derived to predict the consolidation characteristics of normally consolidated (NC) and overconsolidated (OC) soft clays subjected to cyclic loading. A developed feature of the coefficient of consolidation containing two key parameters is emerged from the differential equations. Effect of these parameters on the consolidation characteristics of soft clays is analytically discussed. It is shown that the ratios between the slopes of e-$log{\sigma}^{\prime}$ and e-log k lines in the NC and OC states play a major role in the consolidation process. In the companion paper, the critical assumptions made in the analytical discussion are experimentally verified and a numerical study is carried out in order to examine the proposed theory.

Probabilistic study of the influence of ground motion variables on response spectra

        Yazdani, Azad,Takada, Tsuyoshi Techno-Press 2011 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.39 No.6

Response spectra of earthquake ground motions are important in the earthquake-resistant design and reliability analysis of structures. The formulation of the response spectrum in the frequency domain efficiently computes and evaluates the stochastic response spectrum. The frequency information of the excitation can be described using different functional forms. The shapes of the calculated response spectra of the excitation show strong magnitude and site dependency, but weak distance dependency. In this paper, to compare the effect of the earthquake ground motion variables, the contribution of these sources of variability to the response spectrum's uncertainty is calculated by using a stochastic analysis. The analytical results show that earthquake source factors and soil condition variables are the main sources of uncertainty in the response spectra, while path variables, such as distance, anelastic attenuation and upper crust attenuation, have relatively little effect. The presented formulation of dynamic structural response in frequency domain based only on the frequency information of the excitation can provide an important basis for the structural analysis in some location that lacks strong motion records.

Lion Optimization Algorithm (LOA): A nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm

Yazdani, Maziar,Jolai, Fariborz Society for Computational Design and Engineering 2016 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.3 No.1

During the past decade, solving complex optimization problems with metaheuristic algorithms has received considerable attention among practitioners and researchers. Hence, many metaheuristic algorithms have been developed over the last years. Many of these algorithms are inspired by various phenomena of nature. In this paper, a new population based algorithm, the Lion Optimization Algorithm (LOA), is introduced. Special lifestyle of lions and their cooperation characteristics has been the basic motivation for development of this optimization algorithm. Some benchmark problems are selected from the literature, and the solution of the proposed algorithm has been compared with those of some well-known and newest meta-heuristics for these problems. The obtained results confirm the high performance of the proposed algorithm in comparison to the other algorithms used in this paper.

Nonlinear consolidation of soft clays subjected to cyclic loading - Part II: Verification and application

        Yazdani, Hessam,Toufigh, Mohammad Mohsen Techno-Press 2012 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.4 No.4

In the companion paper, the nonlinear consolidation of soft clays subjected to cyclic loading was analytically investigated. This paper reports the results of an experimental program conducted to verify some critical assumptions made in the analytical study. It, also, includes a numerical study carried out to examine the capability of the proposed theory to determine the consolidation characteristics of soft clays subjected to cyclic loading. Results show that the permeability of the soft clays does not significantly change during the cyclic loading. It is also shown that, compared to the Terzaghi's solution for a linear clay, the inherit nonlinearity of the clay tends to decrease the degree of consolidation due to the smaller rate of dissipation in the excess pore water pressure.

A New Family of Non-Isolated Zero-Current Transition PWM Converters

Yazdani, Mohammad Rouhollah,Dust, Mohammad Pahlavan,Hemmati, Poorya The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2016 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.16 No.5

A new auxiliary circuit for boost, buck, buck-boost, Cuk, SEPIC, and zeta converters is introduced to provide soft switching for pulse-width modulation converters. In the aforementioned family of DC-DC converters, the main and auxiliary switches turn on under zero current transition (ZCT) and turn off with zero voltage and current transition (ZVZCT). All diodes commutate under soft switching conditions. On the basis of the proposed converter family, the boost topology is analyzed, and its operating modes are presented. The validity of the theoretical analysis is justified by the experimental results of a 100W, 100 kHz prototype. The conducted electromagnetic emissions of the proposed boost converter are measured and found to be lower than those of another ZCT boost converter.

Natural Occurrence of Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus in Iranian Cucurbit Crops

        Yazdani-Khameneh, Sara,Aboutorabi, Samaneh,Shoori, Majid,Aghazadeh, Azin,Jahanshahi, Parastoo,Golnaraghi, Alireza,Maleki, Mojdeh The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2016 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.32 No.3

The main areas for field-grown vegetable production in Iran were surveyed during the years of 2012-2014 to determine the occurrence of begomoviruses infecting these crops. A total of 787 leaf samples were collected from vegetables and some other host plants showing virus-like symptoms and tested by an enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using polyclonal antibodies produced against Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV). According to the ELISA results, 81 samples (10.3%) positively reacted with the virus antibodies. Begomovirus infections were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using previously described TYLCV-specific primer pair TYLCV-Sar/TYLCV-Isr or universal primer pair Begomo-F/Begomo-R. The PCR tests using the primer pair TYLCV-Sar/TYLCV-Isr resulted in the amplification of the expected fragments of ca. 0.67-kb in size for ELISA-positive samples tested from alfalfa, pepper, spinach and tomato plants, confirming the presence of TYLCV. For one melon sample, having a week reaction in ELISA and no reaction in PCR using TYLCV-specific primers, the PCR reaction using the primer pair Begomo-F/Begomo-R resulted in the amplification fragments of the expected size of ca. 2.8 kb. The nucleotide sequences of the DNA amplicons derived from the isolate, Kz-Me198, were determined and compared with other sequences available in GenBank. BLASTN analysis confirmed the begomovirus infection of the sample and showed 99% identities with Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV); phylogenetic analysis supported the results of the database searches. This study reports the natural occurrence of TYLCV in different hosts in Iran. Our results also reveal the emergence of ToLCNDV in Iranian cucurbit crops.

Classification and Comparison of EMI Mitigation Techniques in Switching Power Converters - A Review

Yazdani, Mohammad Rouhollah,Farzanehfard, Hosein,Faiz, Jawad The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2011 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.11 No.5

Power electronic systems such as switching power supplies are accounted as noise sources for other sensitive circuits. EMI caused by power converters can disturb the normal operation of the converter and other adjacent systems. Major research is concentrated on EMI mitigation for power converters in which the main concern is compliance with EMC standards to ensure proper operation of converters and nearby systems. This paper reviews EMI reduction techniques related to switching power converters with emphasis on the conducted EMI. A comprehensive review of significant research works is performed and various methods are thoroughly discussed and compared. Also, a classification of methods is presented. Moreover, converter prototypes are realized which contain several EMI mitigation techniques and their effects are presented via experimental results.

Enhancing evacuation response to extreme weather disasters using public transportation systems: a novel simheuristic approach

Maziar Yazdani,Mohammad Mojtahedi,Martin Loosemore 한국CDE학회 2020 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.7 No.2

In recent years, there have been an increasing number of extreme weather events that have had major impacts on the built environment and particularly on people living in urban areas. As the frequency and intensity of such events are predicted to increase in the future, innovative response strategies to cope with potential emergency conditions, particularly evacuation planning and management, are becoming more important. Although mass transit evacuation of populations at risk is recognized to play a potentially important role in reducing injury and mortality rates, there is relatively little research in this area. In answering the need for more research in this increasingly important and relatively new field of research, this study proposes a hybrid simulation–optimization approach to maximize the number of evacuees moved from disaster-affected zones to safe locations. In order to improve the efficiency of the proposed optimization approach, a novel multipopulation differential evolution approach based on an opposition-based learning concept is developed. The results indicate that even for large populations the proposed approach can produce high-quality options for decision makers in reasonable computational times. The proposed approach enables emergency decision makers to apply the procedure in practice to find the best strategies for evacuation, even when the time for decision making is severely limited.
