Effects of air-impingement jet drying on drying kinetics and quality retention of tomato slices

The purpose was to explore the drying kinetics,the moisture effective diffusivities, color, total polyphenols,lycopene and antioxidant activities of dried tomatoslices by air-impingement jet drying (AIJD). The resultsshowed that high temperature increased the drying rate, andModified Page model accurately predicted the AIJD characteristicsof tomato slices. AIJD is better than hot airdrying in shortening drying time, enhancing drying rate anddecreasing the loss of total polyphenols, lycopene andantioxidant capacity of tomato slices. Tomato slices driedby AIJD also showed higher lightness and redness. Lycopenecontent and antioxidant activity of tomato slices driedby AIJD were increased by higher drying temperature. Based on experimental data, AIJD at 80 C can be used intomato drying process due to the advantages in dryingefficiency and content of bioactive compounds. This studywill provide helpful information for the production of highquality of dried tomato products.

Kumquat is famous for its unique flavor and nutritional value. In this study, the drying kinetics, moisture effective diffusivity, phytochemical properties, and antioxidant capacities of kumquat dried by hot air drying (HAD) and air-impingement jet drying (AIJD) were comparatively investigated. The results showed that drying rate, moisture effective diffusivity, and nutrient retention under AIJD were better than those under HAD. Fourteen polyphenols were identified by UPLC-QqQ-MS/MS in kumquat slices. The content of limonoid was significantly increased after AIJD. It was also found that high temperature contributed to a higher drying rate. However, most of the polyphenol components decreased at high drying temperatures. Accordingly, AIJD 60 °C was regarded as the optimum condition for kumquat drying. This work contributed to a better understanding of the drying character of kumquat under AIJD and showed the bioactive compounds and antioxidant activities are affected by drying methods.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of three different drying methods, freeze drying (FD), vacuum drying (VD) and oven drying (OD) on phenolic contents and antioxidant activities of litchi fruits. 20 polyphenols were exactly identified in the litchi fruits by UPLC-QqQ/MS. Significant losses were observed in the contents of total polyphenols and antioxidant activities in the dried litchi when compared with the fresh litchi. Principle component analysis indicated that there was significant difference of phenolic component between the use of thermal drying (VD and OD) and FD. Our results suggest that FD is the optimum drying method for litchi fruits considering the content of total polyphenols and antioxidant activities.

The aim of this study was to compare the phenoliccompound profiles and antioxidant capacities of eightvarieties of longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour.) planted inthe middle and upper Yangtze River area. The totalpolyphenols content (TPC) and total flavonoids content(TFC) of dried longan pulp ranged from 1.07 ± 0.05 to1.22 ± 0.05 mg gallic acid equivalents/g and 0.25 ± 0.07to 0.87 ± 0.14 mg rutin equivalents/g. UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS analysis revealed 12 individual polyphenol compoundsin longan. The Fuwan8, Dongliang and FD97 varietiesshowed the strongest DPPH scavenging activity (IC50 of1.03 g/mL). The highest ABTS? scavenging activity wasfound in the Dongliang. In the enzyme assays, the Fuwan8and Dongliang varieties demonstrated maximum a-amylaseand a-glucosidase inhibition activities, with values of97.56 and 88.58%, respectively. The principal componentanalysis indicated that the Rongyu8 and Songfengbencultivars have nearly analogous polyphenol compounds.
A Receiver-Driven Loss Recovery Mechanism for Video Dissemination over Information-Centric VANET

Information-Centric Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (IC-VANET) is a promising network architecture for the future intelligent transport system. Video streaming applications over IC-VANET not only enrich infotainment services, but also provide the drivers and pedestrians real-time visual information to make proper decisions. However, due to the characteristics of wireless link and frequent change of the network topology, the packet loss seriously affects the quality of video streaming applications. In this paper, we propose a REceiver-Driven loss reCOvery Mechanism (REDCOM) to enhance video dissemination over IC-VANET. A Markov chain based estimation model is introduced to capture the real-time network condition. Based on the estimation result, the proposed REDCOM recovers the lost packets by requesting additional forward error correction packets. The REDCOM follows the receiver-driven model of IC-VANET and does not require the infrastructure support to efficiently overcome packet losses. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed REDCOM improves video quality under various network conditions.
A missense variant in NCF1 is associated with susceptibility to multiple autoimmune diseases

<P>Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous autoimmune disease with a strong genetic component characterized by autoantibody production and a type 1 interferon signatures. Here we report a missense variant (g.74779296G>A; p.Arg90His) in NCF1, encoding the p47phox subunit of the phagocyte NADPH oxidase (NOX2), as the putative underlying causal variant that drives a strong SLE-associated signal detected by the lmmunochip in the GTF2IRD1-GTF2I region at 7q11.23 with a complex genomic structure. We show that the p.Arg90His substitution, which is reported to cause reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production(2), predisposes to SLE (odds ratio (OR) = 3.47 in Asians (P-meta = 3.1 x 10(-104)), OR = 2.61 in European Americans, OR = 2.02 in African Americans) and other autoimmune diseases, including primary Sjogren's syndrome (OR = 2.45 in Chinese, OR = 2.35 in European Americans) and rheumatoid arthritis (OR = 1.65 in Koreans). Additionally, decreased and increased copy numbers of NCF1 predispose to and protect against SLE, respectively. Our data highlight the pathogenic role of reduced NOX2-derived ROS levels in autoimmune diseases.</P>
