Backup Plans and Creative Problem-Solving: Effects of Causal, Error, and Resource Processing
Vincent Giorgini,Michael D. Mumford 대한사고개발학회 2013 The International Journal of Creativity & Problem Vol.23 No.2
Creative problem-solving involves not just the generation of ideas, but also the formation of plans for implementing these ideas. In plan execution, however, especially when plans for implementing creative ideas are formulated, unexpected events occur. As a result backup planning can be expected to contribute to creative problem-solving. In the present study, undergraduates were asked to formulate an initial plan, backup plans, and a final plan for restructuring a company. Final plans were evaluated for quality, originality, and elegance while backup plans were appraised for key attributes such as detailedness and depth. It was found that the attributes of backup plans were positively related to the quality, originality, and elegance of solutions to the creative problem. Moreover, stronger backup plans were obtained when people were primed to think about resource requirements. The implications of these findings for understanding the role of planning in creative problem-solving are discussed.
