The Levels of Sulfur-containing Metabolites in Brassica napus are Not Influenced by the Circadian Clock but Diurnally

        Johann Hornbacher,Annekathrin Rumlow,Philip Pallmann,Ariel E. Turcios,Anja Riemenschneider,Jutta Papenbrock 한국식물학회 2019 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.62 No.5

Adapting biological processes to an endogenousrhythm enables plants to cope with the daily changes in lightand temperature in a more predictable way enhancing growthand fitness. A number of biological processes such asmetabolic pathways as well as the immunity in plants areunder diurnal or circadian control. In this study a possiblecircadian regulation of key enzymes in the sulfur assimilationand the corresponding metabolites was investigated in theagriculturally important crop plant oilseed rape (Brassicanapus). Leaves of a commercially available cultivar wereharvested in the course of a day under diurnal and underfree-running conditions with constant light. Analyses in thisstudy were focused on sulfur-containing metabolites andexpression analysis of enzymes involved in sulfur assimilation. Expression analysis showed that the transcript levels of thesulfate transporters Sultr3;1 and Sultr4;2 as well as APR2and APR3 oscillated diurnally. Results revealed a periodicrhythm of sulfur-containing metabolites such as glutathione, sulfate and certain glucosinolates in the course of a daywhich were only partly maintained under constant light. Therefore, we conclude that a diurnal rhythm and not thecircadian clock regulates sulfur metabolism in plants.

Effects of Metal Ions on the Reactivity and Corrosion Electrochemistry of Fe/FeS Nanoparticles

        Kim, Eun-Ju,Kim, Jae-Hwan,Chang, Yoon-Seok,Turcio-Ortega, David,Tratnyek, Paul G. American Chemical Society 2014 Environmental science & technology Vol.48 No.7

<P>Nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI) formed under sulfidic conditions results in a biphasic material (Fe/FeS) that reduces trichloroethene (TCE) more rapidly than nZVI associated only with iron oxides (Fe/FeO). Exposing Fe/FeS to dissolved metals (Pd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, and Mn2+) results in their sequestration by coprecipitation as dopants into FeS and FeO and/or by electroless precipitation as zerovalent metals that are hydrogenation catalysts. Using TCE reduction rates to probe the effect of metal amendments on the reactivity of Fe/FeS, it was found that Mn2+ and Cu2+ decreased TCE reduction rates, while Pd2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ increased them. Electrochemical characterization of metal-amended Fe/FeS showed that aging caused passivation by growth of FeO and FeS phases and poisoning of catalytic metal deposits by sulfide. Correlation of rate constants for TCE reduction (<I>k</I>obs) with electrochemical parameters (corrosion potentials and currents, Tafel slopes, and polarization resistance) and descriptors of hydrogen activation by metals (exchange current density for hydrogen reduction and enthalpy of solution into metals) showed the controlling process changed with aging. For fresh Fe/FeS, <I>k</I>obs was best described by the exchange current density for activation of hydrogen, whereas <I>k</I>obs for aged Fe/FeS correlated with electrochemical descriptors of electron transfer.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/esthag/2014/esthag.2014.48.issue-7/es405622d/production/images/medium/es-2013-05622d_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/es405622d'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Effect of acidic beverages on surface roughness and color stability of artificial teeth and acrylic resin

Bitencourt, Sandro Basso,Catanoze, Isabela Arague,da Silva, Emily Vivianne Freitas, dos Santos, Paulo Henrique, dos Santos, Daniela Micheline,Turcio, Karina Helga Leal,Guiotti, Aimee Maria The Korean Academy of Prosthodonitics 2020 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.12 No.2

PURPOSE. The aim was to evaluate the effect of four acidic beverages on the roughness (Ra) and color change (ΔEab) of two brands of artificial teeth and a heat-polymerized acrylic resin (HPAR) for use in a prosthetic base. MATERIALS AND METHODS. All materials were divided into 5 groups, according to the used acidic beverage (artificial saliva - control, red wine, orange juice, coke-based, and lemon juice-based soft drink). The immersion process was divided into two stages: T1 - immersion in the acidic solutions for 10 minutes for 14 days; T2 - after T1, the samples were immersed in grape juice for 14 days. The Ra of the samples was evaluated in a rugosimeter and the ΔEab in a spectrophotometer, before and after the immersions. The analysis of variance of one (ΔEab) and two factors (Ra) and Tukey were performed (α=.05). RESULTS. There was a statistical difference for roughness after immersion (T1) for Trilux and Tritone teeth, regardless of the acid solution. For Trilux teeth, all acid solutions increased Ra (P<.05). For Tritone teeth, only the coke-based soft drink did not statistically change Ra. Grape juice (T2) altered Ra only of artificial teeth (P<.05). The color was changed for all materials, after T1 and T2. CONCLUSION. In general, the acidic solutions changed the Ra and ΔEab of HPAR and artificial teeth after T1. The grape juice altered the roughness only of the artificial teeth, promoting a clinically acceptable color change in the materials.

Effect of Acupuncture on Post-implant Paresthesia

Crischina Branco Marques Sant’Anna,Paulo Renato Junqueira Zuim,Daniela Atili Brandini,Aimee Maria Guiotti,Joao Batista Vieira,Karina Helga Leal Turcio 사단법인약침학회 2017 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.10 No.2

Paresthesia is defined as an alteration in local sensibility, associated with numbness, tingling, or unpleasant sensations caused by nerve lesions or irritation. It can be temporary or permanent. The treatment protocol for facial paresthesia is primarily based on the use of drugs and implant removal, which may not be completely effective or may require other risk exposure when there is no spontaneous regression. However, other therapeutic modalities such as acupuncture can be used. The aim of this study is to report a case of a patient with paresthesia of the inferior alveolar nerve and pain caused by an implant surgery performed 2 years earlier. The patient received acupuncture treatment during 4 months of weekly sessions. Six points were used: Large Intestine (LI4), Large Intestine (LI11), Stomach (ST36), Liver (LR3), Extra Head and Neck (E-HN-18), and Stomach (ST5). The visual analog scale was used before and after each session for the analysis of paresthesia and pain, together with assessment of the paresthesia by delimitation of the desensitized region of the skin and presented discomfort. Pain remission and reduction in the size of the paresthesia area occurred after four sessions.

Treatment of Masticatory Muscle Pain with Acupuncture: Is It Necessary to Associate with Occlusal Splints?

Crischina Branco Marques Sant’Anna,Fernanda Pereira de Caxias,Paulo Renato Junqueira Zuim,Marcella Santos Januzzi,Emily Viviane Freitas da Silva,Karina Helga Leal Turcio 사단법인약침학회 2021 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.14 No.3

Background: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are treated by different modalities including splints, physiotherapy, and acupuncture. Although all of these offer evidencebased benefits to the patients, avoiding overtreatment is of paramount importance. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of muscle pain treatment with acupuncture combined with or without occlusal splints. Methods: Recruited patients were allocated to G1 (acupuncture) and G2 (acupuncture and occlusal splint) groups and treated in four consecutive weekly sessions (P1, P2, P3, and P4). The reported pain (RP) and the pressure pain threshold (PPT) of the masseter and temporalis muscles were assessed before and after each session. Results: RP decreased after each session in G1, except at P4. In G2, the RP decreased only after the first session, and the PPT did not vary. Conclusion: The assessed treatments did not influence the PPT levels of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles in patients with temporomandibular disorders. Our findings suggest that occlusal splints may not be mandatory along with the acupuncture treatment.
