Fabrication of tubular ceramic-supported malic acid cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol)/ rice husk ash-silica nanocomposite membranes for ethanol dehydration by pervaporation

Tran Minh Ngoc,Tran Minh Man,Mai Thanh Phong,Mai Thanh Phong,Nguyen Huu Hieu 한국화학공학회 2019 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.36 No.4

Silica nanoparticles were prepared from rice husk ash (RHA-silica) by precipitation method. The characterization of RHA-silica was studied by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area. Results showed that RHA-silica was successfully synthesized with a particle size of 5-15 nm and purity of 98.08%. The obtained RHA-silica was applied with different content for fabrication of tubular ceramic-supported poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes using malic acid as a cross-linking agent (RHA-silica/MA-PVA) by dip-coating and solvent evaporation methods. The tubular ceramic-supported RHA-silica/MA-PVA membranes were used for dehydration of 95 wt% ethanol solution by pervaporation (PV) technology. Results indicated membrane with 15 wt% RHA-silica (15RHA-silica/MA-PVA) was suitable for the dehydration with permeate flux of 0.0856 kg/m2·h, separation factor of 46.6, and pervaporation separation index of 3.9 kg/m2h. The tubular ceramic-supported 15RHA-silica/MA-PVA membrane was characterized using XRD, FTIR, scanning electron microscope, differential scanning calorimetry, and contact angle measurement. Results showed that this membrane was 30 m thick, mechanical stable (swelling rate, 133.9%), hydrophobic (contact angle, 81o), and thermal stable (glass transition temperature, 138.7 oC). Therefore, the tubular ceramic-supported nanocomposite membrane could be considered as a potential alternative for PV dehydration of ethanol.

Behavioral Factors on Individual Investors' Decision Making and Investment Performance: A Survey from the Vietnam Stock Market

CAO, Minh Man,NGUYEN, Nhu-Ty,TRAN, Thanh-Tuyen Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.3

The stock market shows the current health of an economy, and investment performance represents it. This study aims to clarify the relationship between financial behavior and investment decisions as well as its impact on investment results. Determine the influence of behavioral factors on individual investors' investment decisions and investment performance on the Vietnam stock market. The study surveyed 250 investors. The main analytical methods used are Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Research results show that Heuristic, Prospect, Market, and Herding directly and positively affect investment decision-making. Besides, the above factors have a direct and positive effect on investment performance. In particular, the Prospect factor has the strongest influence on investment decision-making and investment performance. The major findings of this study suggested that the important role of Heuristic, Prospect, Market, and Herding on Investment Decision-making and Investment Performance. Prospect had the strongest impact on Investment decision-making (β = 0.275). Heuristic had the second strongest impact (β = 0.257), then Herding (β = 0.202), and finally Market (β = 0.189) had the weakest effect. Regarding Investment Performance, the Prospect factor has a higher degree of impact than Heuristic Herding and Market.

Thread-embedding acupuncture may improve symptom resolution in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease: A randomized controlled trial

        Trinh Dieu-Thuong Thi,Tran An Hoa,Bui Minh-Man Pham,Vuong Nguyen Lam 한국한의학연구원 2023 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.12 No.3

Background: Various traditional medicine treatments have been investigated to treat GERD. Among those, thread-embedding acupuncture (TEA) has the advantage that patients need to undergo the procedure infrequently; however, its efficacy is unclear. This study evaluated the efficacy of TEA in treating GERD. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 66 participants with GERD: 33 received two sessions of TEA + standard therapy (proton-pump inhibitor [PPI]) (TEA+PPI group) and 33 received PPI alone (PPI group). Primary outcomes included GerdQ score and heartburn and regurgitation resolution. Secondary outcomes were antacids requirement, the Frequency Scale for Symptoms of GERD (FSSG) score, and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease-Health Related Quality of Life (GERD-HRQL) score. The safety outcome was adverse events (AEs). Results: After four weeks of treatment, the TEA+PPI group significantly reduced the GerdQ score (mean difference [MD] and 95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.8 [-2.4, -1.1]) and increased the rate of heartburn and regurgitation resolution compared to PPI (54.5% versus 9.1%, respectively) compared to PPI. The TEA+PPI group also significantly reduced the number of antacid packs used (MD [95%-CI]: -9.4 [-12.1, -6.7]), FSSG score (MD [95%-CI]: -9.4 [-11.0, -7.8]), and GERD-HRQL score (MD [95%-CI]: -5.6 [-7.7, -3.5]) compared to PPI. Five patients experienced AEs, which were mild local complications at the acupoints. Conclusion: TEA combined with PPI is more effective than PPI alone in treating GERD. Further studies with longer follow-ups are required to confirm these findings.

Rare Complication of Strongyloidiasis in Vietnam: A Case of Venous Thromboembolism and Duodenal Obstruction

        Tien Huynh Manh,Khanh Quoc Le Tran,Phat Tan Ho,Man Minh Vo,Thong Quang Pham,Thong Duy Vo 대한소화기학회 2023 대한소화기학회지 Vol.81 No.6

Strongyloidiasis, a chronic helminth infection caused by the parasitic nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, has various clinical manifestations. Although rare, duodenal obstructions and venous thromboembolism are possible complications of strongyloidiasis. This paper presents the case of a 47-year-old Vietnamese male with a history of right lower limb edema, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort lasting for four months. Venous Doppler ultrasound detected a thrombus in the right femoral vein, while an abdominal CT scan revealed a mass lesion suggestive of a lower bile duct tumor. Esophageogastroduodenoscopy showed a friable duodenal cap mucosa with multiple ulcers and edematous mucosa of the second part of the duodenum that caused a partial lumen obstruction. The final histological examination of the biopsy specimen revealed chronic duodenitis with larvae consistent with Strongyloides stercoralis. The patient was treated with Ivermectin for two weeks and anticoagulation therapy for three months. After treatment and a six-month follow-up, the patient's gastrointestinal symptoms and leg swelling resolved completely. This is the first documented case of a patient in Vietnam with strongyloidiasis who presented with venous thromboembolism and duodenal obstruction.
